optical drives for notebooks

Post by pabrimmer » Tue Sep 27, 2005 7:54 am

Are optical drives and drive bays on notebook chassis fairly standard? If they are not, how do you find out which drives will fit in your chassis? This question occurred to me while reading the How to Build a Sonoma Notebook article, where one of the components listed is the "Z71 chassis" DVD/CD RW+ drive.
thanks,
Paul

Notebook Optical Drives are NOT standard. Since each notebook has a different case the front bezel and mounting brackets have to be different per notebook. Two years ago when I built my first notebook I made the mistake of ordering a generic one off newegg and I got an optical drive with a flat front and no mounting hardware.

The Asus Z71V & Z71A Notebooks use the following optical drives:

ASUS Black 8X DVD-ROM/24X CD-R IDE Combo Drive
Model # 90-N9Q1G1000
Pricing: $69

ASUS 8x Dual Layer IDE DVD Burner
Model # 90-N9Q1W1000
Pricing: $122

ASUS Second Hard Drive Housing (Fits in Optical Drive)
Model # 90N9Q1SH110
Pricing: $41

ASUS Second Battery (Fits in Optical Drive)
Model # 90N9Q1B3100
Pricing: $109

Thanks for the list, Apop! Google wasn't my friend on this one :( I couldn't find anything about it.

I believe it's time for the right e-tailers to "de-virginize" the fledgling whitebox market fully. I would love to see chassis prices and the rest of the components to plummet so I can feed my ever-growing addiction to technology. Ah, my true love hath arrived, lol (I need to get laid with my pure self :finga:  )

ALWAYS check the hardware list. nothing sucks more than just getting somthing that won't work and comes with a restocking fee.
