Problem Deciding.

Post by steelghost »

First, greetings to all on this forum.

Secondly, my problem.

I'm in the progress of researching to find a laptop to buy to suit my needs.

I'm a programmer and also a gamer. I currently am using 12" Powerbook which is pretty good, except for the problem that it's 2 years old, and can't support .NET programing (Microsoft....). It takes ages to compile my programs... So I'm looking to get a new laptop.

I would like to purchase one that is between the size of 12" to about 15". Preferably the smaller the better. BUT the problem is I would like a decent graphics card in it also. It seems the smallest laptop that I have found is the Sony VAIO VGN-S56GP which has the 6400 GO in it and is 13.3". The Asus Z71V is also a choice, but compared to the VAIO is a bit bigger, with a better graphics card and I can also customize all the other options to meet my requirements. Also there is the MSI MS-1032 with the 6600 or the MSI MS-1029 with the x700. I would have chose the VAIO if it wasn't so pricey. So I was just looking for an alternative, but then 15" seems so big... Maybe it's cuz I've been using this Powerbook...

Suggestions?

Thanks.

:: high fives sbohdan :: right on man! yeah, building a notebook is awesome, especially this Z63A by Asus that's featured. I still can't believe the guy had comparable performance on his new lappie as he has with his OC'd P4 desktop! Don't get me wrong, Apple has great notebooks, but you pay for that too. You can build an x86-based gaming notebook for cheaper than you can buy one, that's for sure. Lightweight, extremely portable unlike the notebooks of old, and a boatload of power to boot....what more could you ask for? 8)

Thanks alot! I read through that and that computer seems fairly good, but the graphics card is a little weak.

I would like something that is up to par or closer to the performance of the Sony Vaio that I mentioned.

ok, i guess the 6400 is piece too... it's even worser than the X600... from some reviews that i read, which i forgot the links to...

it would be great to have a 14" or so with a newer generation graphics card. But it seems i have to fall into the 15" category.

I've looked at the Z71V from Asus and the MS-1032 from MSI. Both have virtually the same specs, but the MSI is smaller in size.

So ASUS or MSI? or if anyother better suggestions?

They have different types of screens... It really just depends on your LCD preference. I run the ASUS Z71V, but never used the MSI -- so I am of no use between the two.

Hmm... what do you guys think of the Turion? How would it compare to the Pentium M?

The barebone I found for it, is the Asus A6U. Another chassis suggestions?

in terms of efficiency and ability to save power, I would go with the Pentium M. Intel pretty well has the market in mobile processing, just like AMD pretty well has the market for desktop units. As a matter of fact, I think (my short term memory is shot and I forgot, lol) the Yonah T1600 dual-core uses a max of 49W...corrections for this is welcome, as I'm just playing this off the top of my head to see what I can remember, lol. but still, Intel mobile processors are great, and I really am not a big fan of Intel.

Well finally today I went to go see what they have to offer here in Hong Kong. Guess what.... They don't sell any of the barebones here.... But i tried out many of the 15" or 15.4" ones and I came to a conclusion that they are too heavy and big...

So... I've changed my mind once again. My friend who went to check out the laptops with me ended up purchasing Toshiba M50. Which is pretty nice. But I also like the Asus W3V.

Which one should I choose?
