well, concerning the battery life, I really couldn't help you there until you can post the specs of your lappie for me.
here's where you can get CPU-Z, which can tell you what kind of processor you have, what frequency (MHz or GHz, depending on what hardware we're talking about and its speed) it's running at, and some other major info, like your mobo manufacturer and model (under "mainboard" tab), and also the speed and timings your memory is running at, under the "memory" tab.
anyways, here's the link:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
click on the link under the "Latest Version" heading on the left side of the screen and download it. This is a .zip file, so unzip it and double-click the CPU-Z icon, and you'll have your info, right there in front of you.
Also, is the laptop itself slow, or your connection to the Internet? if it's your connection, are you on a network? What kind of router do you have? also, if you have the router in another building, there could be interference from building to building (buddy of mine has a wireless router and tried to use his lappie out in his outbuilding, which is made of metal, and got mad interference and signal droppage). Pardon the questions but it's the only way I can know what to tell you, lol
The thing about it all too is the battery may be going bad, which you can get a universal battery, costs less than a factory battery......I'm sure others will chime in, this is just my take on this.

If its Centrino based you can use Centrino Hardware Control to set voltages. this can extend your battery life.

Yep,undervolting your cpu can have great benefits in battery life. I've already noticed about a half hour more battery life with mine.
