Post by bigblockmatt »

simple questions.

how many wireless devices can be connected to a single router? like it says 4 port whatever, can i only have a total of 4 devices? or is that only refering to the amount that can be plugged in?

That's correct only 4 wired PC's. If you connect a switch you can then of course have more wired PC's on the network. As far as wireless clients you're limited to 254.

If you're planning to have a lot of wireless users doing large file transfers you'll need a "beefy" model wireless router (Linksys Wireless G with SRX200/SRX400) but if it's only a few then a standard wireless G should be fine.

Or less. TCP/IP limit is 254, but many "home network" grade routers are limited to 32 (partly by design/cache and routing table size) and most become saturated after 8-16 active clients log-in (printers attached network storeage, VoIPdevices etc, are for the most part NOT a problem, even though they demand high bandwidth in use, their routes/tables are very simple/limited)
The info should be in the documentation, but is sometimes buried fairly deeply.
