Laptop advice

Trying to help a friend out with getting a new laptop, Sony Vaio is something I may be leaning towards but trying to get her the better deal. She is only really going to be doing typical everyday use stuff (no gaming). She needs this for our deployment. Watching movies, browsing the web and stuff like that. Like I said "she", so its gotta looki nice too. Lemme know something.

If your going to buy a name brand then i would stick with either IBM as they have some of the best techsuppor and longest lasting notebooks out there. If you want to go a little cheaper then i would say get a Toshiba, as they too have a high quality rating though the tech suppor is not as good as IBM. I would stay away from sony unless you know that you will never under any cercumstances call for support, they make decent laptops (a bit expencive for my tastes) but the support sucks. And i never recomend a dell.

Dell usually has really good warranties, there tech support isn't great by any means, but I broke my Pocket PC and got a new one for free. Gateway makes high quality notebooks from personal experience. I haven't had any experience with IBM, but they seem like a good choice, so get a Gateway or an IBM.

Trying to stay under 17-1800... Thanks for the help so far, I can narrow it down a bit

with that budget... I would go A64 lappy!
... especially if you want to play with it for some time in the future...
eMachines also have good warranties... but I never even tried to use their tech support. (I always waste my time calling tech support because I've already done what they ask me to do)...
But here's a good lappy... at least by spec (A64 3400+):

Both come with ATI 9600 Mobility graphics and a 15.4" widescreen.
This is just what I would do... see what else others say...

With that budget I'd go with a Dothan Pentium-M processor and a Mobility 9700 128mb video card ;)

I think we are all agreed with the Dothan Pent-M. Its going to give you the best preformance and good batt life. If your not planning on useing this laptop for gaming then i would stay away from the 9700 only because it adds to the cost and decreases batt life.
