I have an HP ze4400 laptop that says it has a 2400+ athlon xp on it...does that mean it is a mobile version of the athlon xp 2400+ or can desktop cpus be used in laptops sometimes?
sometimes yes

Sometimes yes, there can be a desktop type cpu in a laptop. Desktop cpus use more power, creating more heat than mobile versions but cost less.
Run the CPU-Z utility to identify exactly what is in there.

It is probably an XP since a lot of them were used on laptops. As MP's were usually used in pairs. THe Mp's however when used single were great overclockers in comparison to the XP's.
