Dell Inspiron 8500 Help - internet not working

I have a buddies computer here. it has been giving him problems and i said i would take a look at it. it is a Dell Inspiron 8500. I cannot get on the internet with it... though i am connected to my router.
It has a linksys WPC54GS notebook adapter plugged in and installed. it says that i have good connection and in the linksys software, it says that i am "connected to the access point and the internet" though i cant do anything on the internet. i have check the network and can access the other computers in the network. i tried pining several site through the command prompt which get timed out.

IE isnt set up to use a non existent proxy or something like that is it?
Are there any firewalls that have blocked access to the internets?

i dont believe so. not sure how to check the proxy thing.

Open up IE and go to tools -> internet options -> connections -> LAN settings, and make sure all those are unticked.
Has IE 7 been recently installed by any chance?
Can you also confirm/deny internet access via an ethernet cable?

there is nothing listed under connections. also, it is on IE 6
I tried plugging it in, internet still didnt work, though i could ping google from command prompt...
*edit* i can also ping google through command prompt when connected wirelessly

Are there any other programs that use internet that you can fire up?
And by "nothing listed under connections" do you mean there is nothing about proxies ticked on the LAN settings button?

i checked myspaceIM (it was on the computer already) and tried to connect through that, it couldnt find a connections - i pinged google again to check, that was successful.
Proxy - sorry for not being clear. when clicking the lan button, the "automatically detect settings" was checked, i unchecked it and nothing changed. I also installed the latest firefox, that didnt work either.

Try installing MSN Messenger and running the troubleshooter on that*, it tests more in depth problems with internet connectivity, so maybe we can narrow it down with that.

*Will either start automatically when it cant sign into msn or go "Tools menu -> Options -> In the left pane, click Connection. -> Under Connection Settings, click Test Connection.

Also, I presume youve done virus/adaware SE/spybot S&D scans?

well, thanks for the help... I ran 2 antivirus programs, adaware and spybot S&D... both found a couple things and fixed them. I had a buddy check it out who does networking stuff and determined to keep the story short - "the comp. is Hosed, save time and money and reformat it" (there was checking and such done, it wasnt a quick decision.
Ill let you know how it all turns out. thanks again.
