Hey everyone, I'm BryanL!

I came across legit-reviews while looking around and researching hardware for my first computer build, hopefully I'll have it done in this coming winter (Nov.-Dec. '07). My computer is due for a major upgrade, especially if I want to keep playing games like Oblivion and CounterStrike: Source, but you can read about the specs in my signature (Dell 8400); as you can already see, nothing too impressive, but wait till you see what I've got coming in my future!

For the moment I'm an AMD fanboy, only because I'll be putting one in my next computer. The pricing is just too competitive, even if quad-core isn't available on the AMD-side... but I know my new one will be competitive enough for me! I play a lot of first-person shooters (CounterStrike: Source, Halo), Elder Scrolls games (Oblivion and Morrowind), and I MMORPG every once in a while (Guild Wars). Any minesweeper fan clubs, too? :D

I won't be overclocking my next computer, but I'd really like to be able to overclock the Core 2 Duo's seeing as they scream ahead of the AMD's so easily. Look at the E4300, a 1.8 to 3.15?!?! Holy Jebus!

Seen as though game to movie adaptations are all the range lately, I heard that they were making minesweeper movie. The trailer is here.

AMD needs the sales, but really, stock price/performance of AMD/Intel is close, and the pricing may be competitive, but factor in the overclockability of the core2's and surely it makes more sense to go with them over AMD?

Yeah, I'm well aware about the OC'ing of C2D's (E4300 @ 3.12GHz!), but I'm really concerned about what the consequences of OC'ing are...? Like does it shorten your processor's lifetime, for example? That's mainly why I'd like to stay stock with my next computer build.

Anyone mind clarifying that though, the consequences of overclocking? If you could just even point me to the direction where I could find that out, that'd be great.

While some will say that it will wear out your processor quicker, and hence shorten its lifespan. It will still last years and years. This only will be an issue if you plan on keeping your next setup for like 5 years or more. And I'm pretty sure that there is someone on here who has had a processor running overclocked longer than that!

So unless you never want to buy another PC, then you won't suffer any consequences by overclocking.

Dang, I think I'll have to rethink my build then! Tom's Hardware had an awesome build using the E4300 OC'ed, had a good article on it not too long ago. Heres' the link; I'll probably have similar hardware, too:

The E4300 got OC'ed from 1.8GHz to 3.15GHz, so the gain in power is pretty incredible Core 2 Duo or not. Here's a comparison of it to two other builds (a higher-end build and Dell's 720 H2C):
