I have been a member for quite some time...but i will be back more frequently soon enough. I am done working overseas in Dubai now and am about to move back to Texas. I have noticed alot of stuff has gotten really cheap now. I still have my system, brought it with me and has not missed a lick.

Main question is are the new games playable on xp sp2 with dx 9c or is everything running on vista platform now???

How has everyone found vista compared to good old xp?

well welcome back zparker! a lot of regular users are sticking with XP SP2 or going to SP3 with mixed results, but the fact is most people just don't want to pay the coin to get DX10

but if you do want DX10 (as most gamers do) Vista 64-Bit seems to be the most popular choice. gaming with 4Gb+ of RAM is a plus factor, even though the results of upgrading from just 2Gb aren't as huge as you might expect

nice thing, like other DirectX versions, is the backwards version compatibility. so if you want to play Crysis or other DX10 games, you'll be fine on XP.
as for Vista, i used it for a while and i had a great experience with it! i went back to XP for one reason: why have Vista when i only have a DX9 GPU? lol
as soon as i upgrade again i'll go ahead and get my triple boot back in order: XP Pro SP2, Vista Ultimate 64-Bit (gaming), and Ubuntu 8.04 (when i can finally get it to work on my pc)

anyhow i know everyone else is gonna want to chime in on the Vista-XP question! welcome back!

my system is still smoking fast, but according to the newest stuff is about 2 years out of date lol. I think the board will support the 45nm chips and if i upgrade it will be quad core with atleast 8mb cache:D

I will check the forums about my next question...wether dx10 will work with xp sp2 or sp3 which i havent even heard of yet... and i am an it coordinator, recently off work :P

Welcome back.

I can tell you now that DX10 only officially works on Vista. There was an unofficial port/hack to get it to work on xp but i don't think they ever got it finished, or if they did, they started charging for it (or something like that).

Welcome back!

AFAIK the 680i Chip Set doesn't support the 45nm Quad Cores!
You could get an 8 series C2D or the Q6600 (65nm) Quad.

welcome back!
as far as most of the first generation of dx10 games gos, you should be able to get "DX10 settings" in xp, because they were just dx9 effects that can only be enabled in vista (through the ingame setup that is, but you can just edit the config files) and 45nm quad support varies from board to board for the 680i chipset
