ATI Radeon 9800 fan problem

Post by John_c »

Hello.

I bought a used ATI Radeon 9800 with a ATI Silencer 1 attached on it. I put it onto my MSI KT4 ULTRA (old card and never really updated) and started the PC. Some seconds later I noticed the fan wasn't spinning, and I shut the PC down immediately (there was a slight burn stench). After some fiddling I couldn't really understand what the problem was so I tried googling but couldn't find anything relevant.
The ATI Silencer 1 has 2 plugs (I guess 2-pin for older cards and 3-pin for newer?) and I've plugged the 2-pin in the card, and I assume the 3-pin hangs freely? If not, I can not locate any 3-pin slots.

Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Maybe my motherboard needs a chip update or a BIOS flash? Or is the card itself malfunctioning (maybe it burned), or can it be the fan itself?

Yes, I realize this is an old card and system but would be nice if I could get the card running.

Thanks for reading, hope you can help or point me in the right direction.

PS I can post picture of card and fan it it's needed.

I have an old X700 that also has an AC Silencer 1 on it. The fan on that too has started to play up, so I wouldn't be surprised if the fan in yours has packed in.

I can bring the fan back to life by pushing down on the AC sticker on the back of the cooler and wiggling with the wire, but it although it comes on it dies again a random amount of time later.

You are probably going to have to find a replacement cooler for the 9800.
