X1950XT software crossfire

Please help!
I have just installed a second identical Sapphire X1950XT to my pc but after installing the drivers the option for crossfire is missing from the Catalyst Control Center...
both cards are installed and visable in device manager but i cannot get Crossfire to run through ccc...
If i install Atitray tool i can start crossfire with that but there are artifacts and freezes...
In bf2142 the game was slower with both cards installed with some very weird effects and shadows...
Futuremark 05 scored 11880 with one card and 13880 with two so crossfire does work in a fashion but again with freezes and unusual shadows....
I have tried the latest 7.10 drivers and tried 7.6 still the same...
i cannot find any settings in the bios at all..
I have read lots of conflicting information about about weather or not you need a master card for x1950xt, does any one know for definate ( i have started a ATI support ticket to find out but yet to receive an answer)

core 2 duo 2.66
2 gig ocz dominator fan
2 X x1950xt
rapter
silverstone 750w 60amp 12v rail
