Did you even bother reading the article? Apparently the Catalyst 8.1 drivers allow you to run a 3870 and 3850 in Xfire.

It would have been a good to see if they compared how aHD3850+HD3750 in Crossfire fair against 2xHD3870s in Crossfire.
