driver update problems

I have the 6490 display drivers installed for my 9600 AIW, dated 24 November. If I try to update them, the monitor goes into standby mode as soon as XP begins to boot. This is after I do a complete uninstall of everything related to ATI, even the registry. Running the install for the previous drivers works ok, and I don't use the XP Restore function. I have recently installed a PCI modem, it shares an IRQ with the video card. But if that is the problem, why would the older drivers work? The mb is a flaky Asus P4S8X (SiS), and it did the same thing when I first plugged the video card in. Changing something in the BIOS fixed it, but I can't remember what it was! Any ideas?

hum... First grab the latest CATALYST 5.3 drivers found here:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def ... olderID=27
The 6.14.10.6490 drivers are nothing more than the CATALYST 4.11 drivers.
Manually remove the 4.11, then run
Driver Cleaner to help clean up all the files that shouldn't be there. Once this is done reboot the system and install CATALYST 5.3 drivers.
Let us know if this helps!

Well now it's really messed up. Instead of loading the new drivers, which somehow got deleted, I went back to the original install CD. SAME PROBLEM! I am now in VGA mode (not safe mode). While installing, I got this error- UCI setup: Internal failure 0x80040703. When booting, it said it was loading ati2evxx.dll. That was the last file I managed to finally delete, even in safe mode it wouldn't delete. I deleted EVERYTHING named ATI on the drive, even those in the reinstall folder. I tried running SFC/scannow, it couldn't access the CD! But CD drive seems to work otherwise! Guess I'll try copying everything named ATI from the XP Pro CD, or update from device manager. Tried every setting I could think of in the BIOS. Not a good day!

If you keep your OS drive pretty clean you might want to re-install the OS and start from scratch. You are having way too many issues for just some video card drivers

Sorry to hear the tough luck, when in doubt and all else fails re-install XP Pro! 30-60 minutes later you have a clean disk and OS!
time to reinstall!

I forgot that I had a complete backup (MSbackup) from yesterday. Still got a black screen! I finally tried "last known good installation" which has given me problems in the past, but it worked! TV still doesn't work though. Seems to be a conflict with files somewhere, a problem I have always had with XP but not 98 or ME! Or maybe it's this motherboard... I will reinstall XP sometime this week. I'll post later, hopefully I can help someone else with a similar problem.

Ok, this is going to sound really stupid, but hopefully it will help someone in the future with an equally addled brain. I "forgot" that I had a second monitor hooked up! I haven't used it for months and it was covered with junk. I simply pushed the power button & voila! Problem solved! I also forgot that I had the other monitor plugged into "vga1", since it didn't seem to make any difference at the time. Ok, this happened AFTER I reinstalled XP numerous times, with and without sp2, removed the modem, and re-seated the video card. By the way, is there any way to save all of the preferences for the browser, email, passwords, etc, etc, next time I reinstall Windows?
