Why no dual slot 4850's???

Post by CaptChuck »

OK...
So I am a bit tech challenged by all this new GPU stuff. However, with all the discussion about heat issues with the 4850's why didn't/or haven't more companies built the cards as dual slot with better cooling??? It just doesn't make sense to me...........

I did see a dual slot HIS card on Zipzoomfly, however when you go to the HIS site to check it out it is not listed there. AND...when you check the associated images for the listed card, look close..the box reads 3870...........
Win 7 Home
Intel i5 3570K
Antec Kuhler 620 CPU cooler
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W PS
Asus P77-V LE
16GB Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM
Sapphire HD 7970 OC
Asus Xonar DS 7.1 Sound Card
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB SATA II HD
LG DVD
Asus DVD RW

For one, it keeps the costs down, and for two, it will limit the overclocking of the 4850's.

The cores are the same from those to the 4870's, so maybe they want to encourage people to buy the 4870s rather than try overclocking them to similar performance.

The card has only just come out though, give the card makers chance to design coolers to fit, or buy a single slot and get an aftermarket cooler.

same reason you don't see overclocked cards from day one... just give it a few weeks and the overclocked versions will be out and I'm sure companies like Palit will design their own PCB and cooling solution. I'm most excited to see if Palit brings out a custom card down the road.

3rd parties are gonna have their work cut out, as in nate's review, the 4870 still had plenty of temperature issues even though it was a dual-slot card

hopefully we'll see a really good solution come out of this
