HD 4870 problems (PSU?)

Post by Svano »

Good day, i just bought new HD4870 and i have problems with game crysis. Eveything runs good at full details but after 10-25 minutes PC reboots always.
I want ask if the reboots can be caused by not enought power in peaks from PSU. My PSU have 400W (standart "no name"). MB MSI Neo-F, E8400 3GHz noctua cooling, SB live, 2x sata HDD western, 2 GB ram kingstone kit. On the other side i play Lineage2 which is old Unreal engine and the game can run >15 hours without any reboot.
And one question more. Can low power from PSU bottleneck the performance of highend graphic card?
thx for any help

Svano,

Sorry to hear your PC is having issues... When it 'reboots' while gaming does it just shut off real quick like someone pulled the plug? When I've overloaded the power supply in the past that is what it seemed like.

Does your PSU have more than one +12V rails? If you could add up all the Amps from each +12V rail.

hmmm, yeah it reboots realy fast, one time freezes with blank screen and sound was still playing. after this i start thinking something is wrong with GPU and afterwards that the PSU its not enought for. My PSU is standart, not even sata power cables, only 2-3 +12V rails i think. I use now cable "reductions" to connect all devices :D

can you take a picture of the side label on the power supply or find a model? I think you are right on the PSU not keep up with the Radeon HD 4870...

problem solved. It was the PSU. No more crashes anymore and it looks like the performance go little up with the new PSU.

PS. DONT BUY S***Y PSU. NEVER... :D

We keep telling people that, but unless they've had some bad experience with a cheap one, they still want to skimp and get rubbish ones.
