Question about updating drivers

Aloha everyone,
I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro graphics card in my machine, but have recently suffered some strange problems. I haven't updated the drivers yet, but I didn't have any problems until after I swapped out my primary hard drive and reloaded all my software. I loaded WinXP first, then my ATI software.

My question is this: on the ATI website, there are drivers both for the MMC and for Catalyst. I have downloaded and installed the .Net 1.1 framework, so I'm thinking I should just get all of the available updates and install them. BTW, I'm only running SP1 for WinXP as of now. Am I think of doing the right thing? I never updated the drivers before as I didn't have any problems.

Thanks in advance for your replies,

William Jones

Yes, install both MMC and the Catalyst drivers. You will want to install the catalyst drivers first... then restart, then the MMC software.

And unless there is a specific reason, you may want to consider installing the Windows XP SP2 update.

Also, Another thing to consider is what motherboard you have... the most common driver that users forget (myself included) is installing the chipset drivers for the motherboard. So unless you already did it, let us know what motherboard you have and we can help direct you to what chipset drivers to install... you will want to do this before installing the video card drivers because the chipset drivers update the AGP drivers for the system.

Iluminati,

Thanks for the mobo driver tip. I never considered that to be a potential problem. I did install an update, but not until after I installed the video software. As for SP2, I just haven't gotten around to installing that one yet. I'll check the Soyo website to see if there's a new update for the motherboard.

Let me ask another question. Since the motherboard update should be applied before the video software, assuming that there's a newer update than what I have, should I uninstall the ATI software, install the motherboard update, then reinstall the ATI software? Come to think of it, when I originally took possession of my computer (custom built to my specs), I installed the OS, then all of the updates from the motherboard CD, then added all of my other software, so I did it the way Iluminati suggested.

Thanks again for your assistance,

William Jones

if there is a newer update for the chipset drivers than what is on the motherboard cd, which there probably is, then yes, you will want to uninstall the ati software and drivers, update to the new chipset drivers, then reinstall the ati driver and software.

Iluminati,

I checked the Soyo website, but they haven't had any updates past September 2003 for my motherboard, the SY-P4I875P Dragon 2 (Platinum Edition), so I already have the chipset update installed. If I just uninstalled, then re-installed the video software, would that do the trick? Also, with respect to the video software, I would only have to load the latest drivers, correct? I mean, it's no problem to load everything from the CD, then apply the latest update, but I should be able to simply install the latest updates, correct?

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
