I have the newest driver from the ati site.

try downloading riva tuner from http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163 and setting all your fan speeds to max (on the cards that is). Are the cards very close to each other in the case? and what kind of case are you using?

Im using centurion cooler master as a case and my motherboard is MSI P45 PLATINUM.
The update doesn't count for this PC.

We did but the programme that has been linked before in this topic doesn't work, I also looked further on the internet but this problem seems not to be there with Windows XP, so it must be the drivers.
Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
It might say that it hasn't been tested with your driver version, but it should still work.

I had the same with the older driver...
Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
I meant rivatuner.
How far did you get with trying to use it?
What graphic card did you have before the crossfire, and what did you do to uninstall the previous card(s)?

I downloaded riva tuner but it failed to install.
I tried another way to increase the fanspeed.

it didn't stop my system from freezing however. Ati has stated that the cards are supposed to work well over 80 degrees C.
Today I reïnstalled Vista, with all newest drivers except Catalyst and all windows updates available. The system didn't freeze once until the first reboot after installing Catalyst (without Control Center). It froze just after the welcome screen, and later again a few times while i was browsing the internet and trying to post a reply here
My setup:
- Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
- MSI P45 Platinum
- Intel Q9450 quad core processor
- 2x Kingston 2gb DDR2 RAM
- 2x Sapphire ATi Radeon HD4870 DDR5 crossfire
- Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
- Samsung spinpoint 320 GB SATA hd
- Samsung DVD rewriter
- Antec Truepower Quattro 850w
- Cooler Master Centurion 534

Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
Shameless bump here.
I'm having the same problem. My system will either freeze when starting Windows or a little while later, and this is all after I installed the drivers for my HD 4870 (2 in Crossfire). I have an MSI P45 NEO2-FR motherboard, so that may be part of the problem. I'm on 32-bit Vista unfortunately. I've tried both the 8.6 and 8.7 drivers to no avail. Any ideas?

I know its not a solution, but do you still get BSOD's and errors if you don't run in crossfire?

Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
Download and install AMD GPU Clocking tool, it'll show you the temps of both cards but you have to enable it.
Some times in Crossfire the bottom card heats up the top after a while and they artifact.
I got artifacting until I went to a 4870 on top and a 4850 Toxic under. Two 4870s gradually heated and locked. I solved that by putting an expansion slot cooling fan in between them.
Comes down to no solution, uninstall the ATI drivers from the control panel then run Driver cleaner pro, then reboot and go into safe mode and run driver cleaner again. Then boot into windows and reinstall the CCC and drivers. Might help.

Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
Hey guys i could really use some help
recently bought a new system everything is running great.
dual ati 4870's but CLOSE together, as everyone already knows heat is an issue with these.
looked at the diagnostics and checked both temperatures my top card is running at 45 degrees
THANK YOU FOR FAN SPEED CHANGE INSTRUCTIONS!
but my bottom card is still running at 70 degrees
now i am aware in the fan speed profile file u edit, well at least in mine, there are 2 identical entries of cards, the bottom and top
i edited the fan speed for the top and it worked, but my bottom card is still running too hot, and i cant figure out how to turn the speed up on it
i changed the parameters to manual and 65 on the second entry but it still wont run at the same fan speed as the top
anyone have any suggestions how i can get both my cards fan speeds cranked up?
otherwise my system keeps freezing just like u guys.
Thanks!

Re: ati radeon hd 4870 Crossfire X problems
what brand cards are you guys running?
We've had three people say CrossFire doesn't work, but none of the three says anything about what brand they are.
