I have noticed that the ATI 4870 gpu gets stuck at 500mhz after it has been overclocked, I dont know how common the problem is but I have found a solution that gets the GPU back up to 750MHz.
Follow the following guidlines to re-set the clock speed manually:
1.Make a new profile in the catalyst control center (go to the profiles tab open profiles manager\enter or select a profile name\hit save\then hit activate).
2.Enable the overdrive feature buy unlocking it.
3. Enable hidden files useing the control panle (Control panle\Apperance and personalisation\Folder options\view\show hidden files and folders).
4. Seek out the following file directory: "C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE \profiles\(username).
5.Right click (username.XML) and hit edit.
6. Make the following changes to the text
<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="75000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="75000" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="75000" />
Change all want values to 75000
7.Close and Save the file.
8.activate your profile in the catalyst control center (you may need activate youre profile 3+times for all the settings to take effect).
9.GPU should now be set at 750MHz.
To overclock the GPU you will have to change all of the want values manually to higher settings as the ati overdrive software will not overclock the GPU.
