Dual Monitor Flip Flop ATI X1950 Pro

Post by pzoom »

I have a X1950 Pro that is connected to dual monitors. It will absolutley not remember which is display 1 and display 2. Anytime I reboot or sleep mode, it comes up flipped or mirrored.

I ran for ~8 months under XP and it would randomly flip. I am now running Vista 64, and it does the same thing. I tried the latest catalyst and it was even worse - I'd lose my resolution setting on 1 monitor every time.

The only fix I had (under XP and Vista) is to use the analog video inputs. As soon as I use the DVI input to the monitor, the video flips.

I am to the point of taking a baseball bat to it and getting a new card - probably an NVIDIA.

Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe buy a second video card instead of 1 card with dual outputs?

So, you are using CATALYST 8.12 drivers that came out on 12/10/2008 and still seeing the issue? What monitors are you using and are they matching?

Hmm, I hope I don't run into trouble when I do the HDTV + Monitor thing. I never had any issues with dual CRT's (VGA) but now I'm running a 24" LCD the story might change.

I hope to have the HDTV +monitor setup this weekend. I'll post my results for that just for fun. Hope you get it straightened out! (pun intended).

Yes, I downloaded the latest drivers when I installed Vista 64 on 12/10 (catalyst 8.12).

I have dual AOC 22" monitors 1680x1050. What I cannot figure out is the when I use the DVI-VGA adapters, I have no problems. If I go straight DVI, it mixes up.

One thing I did notice is that if I use DVI and I power off a monitor, it automatically makes the other monitor the "main" one. Maybe during boot or wake, it looks to see which monitor is "available" and makes it monitor 1?

Well, no problems here. Cat 8.12. Have you played around with all the settings? tried clone mode? just to make sure everything else is working as expected?

I finally figured it out - well at least found a workaround. I bought a second x1950! I hooked up my second monitor to it. No more flip flops or random swapping. I can run DVI to each monitor and it works great!

Ouch! expensive tech support. Glad it's squared away though.
