running 1080p mkv files on powercolor 2400 hd pro pci card

Post by rickesh6181 »

I have put a topic here before. Basically I have now managed to play 720p mkv files with no problems using windows media player and something called hdtvpump. they work a charm. however when i try to play 1080p mkv files, they just lag like hell, the video is all in slow motion.
Anythin i can do?
i have;
dell dimension 3000
pentium 4 processor
2gb ram
3.00ghz processor speed
1080p monitor connected via DVI cable
powercolor hd pro 2400 pci graphics card ATI

It really could be that your system isn't fast enough to handle full 1080p video.

Looking around at specs, most people (including apple for their quicktime HD format) are recommending a dual core CPU for HD playback.

Does your graphics card support offloading HD decoding from your CPU to GPU? If it does, it being on the PCI bus is going to seriously hinder its performance (I realise that you don't have any other option in the way of upgrading GPU).

So you might have to stick with 720p if that works ok.

You might want to find a program that lets you display the fps that the video is playing back at, and confirm that the video is going a lot slower than the 24(?) fps it should be at.

thanks for the reply, yes the card does decode and i have heard people saying you need a minimum dual core processor.

Dual core Atom can't handle 1080p, so your old P4 won't either. You won't notice the difference in quality between 1080 and 720, so I wouldn't worry.

What CODEC are you using? I was using CCCP for MKV files but I got the same results your getting. I then bought CoreAVC and that fixed my problem. They have a demo you can try before you purchase it.

I would like to know how you even managed a 720p MKV file. I got an old build PC (2004). And i got the POWERCOLOR 2400 HD PRO PCI, cause i dont have any PCI Express slots. The integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 runs 720p MKV files just fine. But after several attempts of reformatting and playing around with the settings and using different players...smooth video playback is just not possible on the POWERCOLOR ATI 2400 PCI...
