ATI Technologies, which reportedly is set to roll out its long-anticipated multi-VPU “Crossfire” technology at the upcoming Computex Taipei, may see a boost in its chipset shipments as well, local motherboard makers predict.

The new multi-VPU Crossfire will be a comparable technology to the SLI (scalable link interface) architecture marketed by rival Nvidia. A report from The Inquirer stated ATI will debut Crossfire on June 1 at Computex Taipei.

Motherboard makers estimate shipments of motherboards based on ATI’s RD400 and RD480 chipsets will be boosted accordingly, with the RD400 supporting the AMDs Socket 939 platform, while the RD480 will support Intel’s LGA 775 Pentium 4 platform.

Bout freeking time, seeing the perforamnce of the X800XL i think ATI is going to have a real competito for SLI and the 6xxx series.

ATI will make all these cards itself as ATI wants full control over this manufacturing process. ATI will name these cards as X850XT Crossfire edition and XT non Platinum edition will cost $549. This card will work with X850XT Platinum edition, X850XT and X850PRO slave cards. The X800XL Crossfire edition card with 256MB will cost $299 while 128MB card will be priced at $249. All Crossfire Edition cards have High Density DMS+DVI dongle which supports DVI+DVI with cable and supports CRT with adaptor.

ATI also claims that the X850XT PE Crossfire is faster than the 6800U SLI.

I bet it will but the cable looks lame compared to the SLI bridge.
