Problems with resolution in games, solved

Hey.
I just got a new computer with a ati hd4870x2 (dual gpu not crossfire). 2gb ddr5.
I'm using a 22inch monitor with a recommended resolution at 1650x1050. I had some problems with getting the desktop set to 1680x1050 but after disabling EDID in the catalyst driver I could select the resolution I wanted. And now I have selected 1680x1050 at the catalyst control center and in the windows settings.
Now to the problem, every single game i start doesn't let me select 1680x1050... These are new games and games wich at my old computer with the same monitor (another ati card same driver) I can select the resolution I want. I even downloaded Rivatuner, and in some settings there you have the option to get driver info to display the valid resolutions. I'm pressing "get driver info" and the max res. that shows up is 1440x900. So this means my ati driver is telling all the games that 1440x900 is the max res I can have. Why?
So, any help would be appreciated

, and excuse my english, not my first language.

Uninstall your ATI drivers, run driver cleaner pro (google it), and then re-install the latest version of ATI's drivers (download a fresh copy to be on the safe side).
Let me know if this helps.

just did this, and after I installed the ati drivers again I could see that both windows and ati capped the res at 1440x900. but after deselecting "get EDID info" in catalyst and
in windows settings advanced settings I made windows display resolutions that was not supported. "Hide modes this monitor does not support" or something like that. I can now again select 1680x1050 in windows and catalyst but not in games...
So, it looks like my monitor is telling windows, catalyst and all the games that my max res. is 1440x900. But, I can plug the same monitor to my other pc and get the res I want... With another ati card and same driver. And another thing, when I select 1680x1050 in my driver shouldnt the games be reading that from the driver and not from the monitor itself?

Is there a driver that you can install for your monitor? (look on the manufacturers website). Sometimes that helps with the PC and letting it know what modes it supports.

Yeah I thought about this aswell, but there was no cd's with the monitor and when I search for it on the fujitsu siemens site I get that no driver is needed for it.
This is what I get when I search at their site:
"Solution:
There is no driver needed for Fujitsu Siemens Computers displays.
Please install the monitor as a "Plug & Play"- monitor. "
Thanks for the help so far but I'm still kinda stuck

Have you tried re-installing just the monitor? (in device manager, find the monitor and uninstall it) Unplugging and re-plugging should bring it back up to install it automatically.
After that the next suggestion I have to try is see if you can get a program that can reprogram monitor EDID's (I think powerstrip can, but you have to buy it). At least get one that can read them first (hopefully there will be some free ones available) and see if it is registering 1680x1050 properly.

Thanks again, I've tried the uninstalling bit and got powerstrip, but haven't bought it yet. So that means I can't click "update EDID".
Going to see if I can get the full program.
Edit: I found out that windows recognize my monitor as a generic non-Plug and Play screen.
Could this all be because of a conflict between my vista and the screen? still strange I get the desired desktop res though... hmmm

Can't get powerstrip to work, or, I mean I can't make it register me as user. It's just every fix needs a new program and everytime I try a new program there's something wrong with it,
close to giving up now, thanks for all the help mate. I might reinstall windows as a last resort but... that needs some energy ;). If I ever get to fix this I'll post here, and if anyone find a fix please let me know

I assume you have changed the selected aspect ratio to whatever 1680x1050 is? most games you have to change the ratio before you can select the actual res...

Can you list what games you're having the problem in?

World of warcraft and every steam game, hl2, all episodes. Cs:source. These are the one I have atm.
While I have your attention I just want to ask whats normal temp for the graphic card, mine's at 92celsius at full load. I have the fans on auto so I'm thinking catalyst got it covered.
And the normal temp for my cpu is 61 at full load with stock fan, is this alright too?

I got it working!! hehe
I made a new driver with powerstrip and updated the driver with device manager, this didn't work at first. But then I upped the refresh rates on the driver so that the driver is giving this info:
max res: 1680x1050
max. scan frequency: 75KhZ and 85Hz
And now it works

Thanks for all the help I got here.
