Powercolor HD 4650 won't display after drivers installed

Post by codeslinger »

I installed a Powercolor HD 4650 in my vista 32 system [4G, E6600, no OC] and it worked fine until I installed the drivers. I tried 4 different version of ATI drivers - two sets from ATI, one from the CD that came with the card and one that I downloaded from Powercolor. All exhibited the same symptoms. Card ran fine, same output on both monitors, until I installed the drivers and then would always come up with no display on either after the initial vista progress bar while the CPU and disk lights are blinkin away. Ran OK in safe mode too and with the msft vga drivers but never with ati drivers. This is an MSI P6n SLI Platimum system with nVidia chipsets but that should not make a difference since I am not using SLI or crossfire mode should it? I only picked this card because it was a decent speed GPU, 512M, had dual DVI ports which I needed and was fanless! Any ideas why I would get no video after installing ATI drivers when it when into vista mode? THe installs always worked fine with no errors. I even ran a driver cleaner and had removed all remnants of the old nVidia graphics drivers. I'd like to keep the card if I could get it to work but meanwhile I put my old XFX/nVidia card back even though it has several capacitors getting ready to blow and it works fine on the dual monitor setup. Thanks for any help, Dave

im gonna ask this question only due to that there have been a few posts with a similar issue..how do you have the cables hooked up tto your video card? do you have dvi or vga going? or do you have both hooked up? as long as you do not have the nvidia driver installed when doing the ATI ones i don't see why it should be an issue..also, you said 4 different sets of drivers, were they the latest ones?(the ones from ATI anyway)

I did uninstall the previous nVidia driver and did a driver clean. The board is nVidia based chipsets so worry about that a bit but I have read supposedly OK. The adapter has dual DVI outputs and I have DVI cables attached to dual monitors at their DVI port. The drivers that came with the CD were vintage Sep08, the downloaded drivers from Powercolor Jan09 and I also downloaded the last two from ATI, sp Jan09 and Feb09 so 3 of the 4 were recent driver sets including CCC. Weird problem and I have not run into anything like this before. I am going to try to call Powercolor now as I have been fooling with mortgage refi rates all day so far. Good time to refi if you can get your appraised value enough to meet the L2V ratio...Thanks, Dave

weird dude...i know one guy posted on here with dual monitors having similar issues, but he hasn't said what fixed it yet..one guy on that topic even said he changed from dvi to vga with the adapters and it worked fine after that..not sure if it would fix the issue, but I would still make a phone call in case though I'm not entirely sure PowerColor will know other than doing an RMA..considering the amount of posts in a relatively short time here with the issue(on different cards), one would think ATI screwed somethin along the line..hope it works out for ya dude

Thanks. The only suggestion Powercolor support had was to update the nVidia chipset drivers so I am going to try that since likely there is a new version from a couple years ago when I put this machine together.

Anyone else has any ideas please throw your .02 in
