If you think that the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Editions cards are extreme, with their six mini DisplayPorts, then think again as PowerColor is working on a Radeon HD 5970 card with 12 (twelve) outputs.

Seen below, PowerColor's uber-Eyefinity HD 5970 model features 12 mini DisplayPorts that can power a maximum of 12 monitors, it takes up three PCI slots so it will have a massive cooler, and packs 4GB of GDDR5 memory. The card's clocks have not been set yet and we may have to wait until early June and Computex to find them out. Still, even at stock HD 5970 frequencies this Hemlock card should be a beast so you may want to start saving up. For both the card and 12 monitors.

What could it render on twelve monitors, each with a fairly high resolution, without lagging? Is there a specified limitation on total resolution?

I can not understand the appeal of these setups. 1 Monitor with ultra high resolution, Awesome. 12 monitors with bezels in between, lame. Can anyone really play on those? Would not your gun site be offscreen in the bezel in fps games?

Besides a security company needing to run 12 monitors at the same time; why would anyone use this? I currently run dual screens, 30inch and 24inch. I love it because I can have open for instance Maya and Photoshop, letting me better work in both of them at the same time. Or I can have a game running on the left, and a movie playing on the right. Thats fun. But what do you do with 12 screens? Seems like it would be a show piece, or be used for something like arrival/departure boards.

The coolest thing I could think of is maybe 12 projectors, 6 showing a left image, 6 showing a right image, overlapped for 3d, on a giant wall. Though I highly doubt even that mighty graphics card can render at good fps.

Some big command center thing could make use of that. Specifically thinking in the telco world and the net ops centers.
