Single slot crossfireX card

Post by lpburke86 »

I need a single slot SLI or CrossfireX card with at least 1 GB of ram and at least 2 DVI or HDMI ports (DisplayPort is useless to me.) ... I also need it to be a readily available card that is not likely to disappear or be discontinued we I need to buy more over the next year.

Any Ideas?

What are you going to be doing with the computer(s) and graphcis cards?
It it just to drive multipler monitors, or any gaming/more intensive tasks involved?
Also, where do you live?, so we can refer suitable some links for you.

I intend to drive multiple monitors, up to 6. And some gaming... or at least the ability to. I am not looking for a top of the line card, just a good multipurpose card. But it has to be crosfireX or SLI compatible, and low profile...

Also, I live in the US, but location is not an issue.

You can by a ACTIVE DisplayPort adpater to convert it to DVI or HDMI...so I don't see the problem with cards that have DP ouput.

Most graphics cards can only drive 3 monitors at once. If you want to run 6 monitors, you'll need to have two cards in non-Crossfire mode. Why? Crossfire basically combines the two cards into one, and uses the outputs on ONE GPU.

If you want to drive 6 monitors all at once with a single card, you will need a card that uses DisplayPorts. XFX 5770 Eyefinity 5 Edition. Even this card only has enough ports for 5 displays. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... XFX%205770

XFX 6770. Basically, the 6770 is identical to the 5770, but with just minor updates.

Here are some single-slot cards that can be ran in Crossfire/SLi either physically (Crossfire bridge) or electronically (via PCI-E slots & motherboard).

XFX 5670. This card uses a single-slot design, able to run Dual-GPU Crossfire with a Crossfire bridge, able to drive 3 displays by HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort.

The reason for not wanting DiplsyPort is simply that I am pissy and dont like adapters... I may have to just get over it.

The reason for crossfire support is that I know I will need 2 cards for the 6 monitors, but would like the ability when I need it to run off of one GPU... Its just to make sure that I dont have to worry about it in the future. I am trying to build a set of machines that will comfortably last 5 to 6 years like the last set that I built.

Something that I have noticed about XFX cards though, is they go out of stock as soon as ATI comes out with a new set of chips. Like the XFX HD 6450 single slot
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... kwCjCECjCE

Most places now only have 5 or 6 and are not sure if they can get anymore.
If they are a superior card than others in the same family, I would be willing to risk that. But so far no one has answered that question... Maybe you can?
Is that (the out of stock part) normal for XFX, or am I just not paying enough attention?

So far, these machines are going to have a Sabertooth x58 MB, Intel 960 CPU, and 24gb Triple channel memory, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion, Corsair Enthusiast TX V2 Series 850-Watt 80 Plus Bronze Certified High Performance Modular Power Supply, and 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Hard Drives.

Graphics cards are the only thing left...

Since I posted this topic originally, I have found a few similar cards to what I'm looking for...
Do you have any thoughts on any of these?

Any computer can last 5-6 years; it just depends on how and what will you use it on. Technology advances at such a fast pace; you can max games out in one year, and have to run newer games on Medium the next. It's best to buy more powerful components, so you won't need to upgrade a frequently to catch up.

Can you rephrase this? "If they are a superior card than others in the same family, I would be willing to risk that. But so far no one has answered that question... Maybe you can?"
I don't quite understnad what you are trying to ask  .

Seems like the XFX HD 6450 is back in stock...it was on sale for a pretty good deal so that's probably why it was out of stock...$54.99 -> $34.99
It's true that when new generation of cards arrive, the older ones will be discontinued by the manufacturers, but a portion of them will remain for a longer time.
Example: You can still find the Radeon HD 4000 series in several places for sale.

a X58 based board....ATX size that has a total of 7 or more PCI-E, PCI slots....which means you need a Mini-ATX, Mid tower ATX or full tower ATX case....why do you require single slot cards? There should be enough spacing for two dual-slot cards AND your sound card, with some room to spare. :? :?

If you are willing to run dual-slot cards instead, then you'll have much, much more choices. Choices that CAN last 5+ years without much problems.

The cards you listed should have no problems driving multiple monitors for general tasks (internet, documents), but will not do so well in more intensive tasks (i.e. gaming). The lower end cards, like the Radeon HD 6450, are not meant/designed to handle GPU intensive tasks.

The Radeon HD 6670 that you linked has some-what similar performances as the Radeon HD 5670. The XFX 6670 that you linked can run Crossfire, but only via electronically as it does have any gold bridge fingers.

A Radeon HD 6770 (a.k.a. 5770) is about 40-50% faster than a 6670. If you run two 5770 in Crossfire, you get almost the equivalent (slightly better) performance as a single Radeon HD 5870. Legit Reviews did a review about 5770/5750 Crossfire a while back.
