AMD To Halt Monthly Driver Releases

Post by Clouseau »

So what is everyone's take on this? With not all that long ago stating that 5000 series and newer would only be supported by 12.8 and beyond, think they are running scared.

Well, they are moving the Radeon HD 5000 series to quarterly driver updates from now on. They aren't ending drivers for those cards. I think the model is great and better than what they have done in the past. For example I have HTPCs running AMD 690G graphics from 2007 and they stopped updating drivers for that GPU nearly two years ago. I mean there are no new drivers at all, not quarterly, not ever.

The AMD Radeon HD 5000 series first came out in 2009 and most enthusiast built PCs have a life-span well under 3-years, so to go from 'monthly' to 'quarterly' updates isn't going to really hurt anyone. I'm just glad they are stilling going to update them on a regular basis beyond a 3-year product cycle.

Back to my AMD 690G graphics driver issue...

The platform came out in Q1 2007 and the last and final driver update was in Q1 2010. So, trust me I'd rather have quarterly updates than having no updates at all like AMD has done in the past with some products. Running Catalyst 10.2 drivers sucks.

So at the end of the day, but AMD and NVIDIA have the same driver release programs now from what I can tell.

Interesting. From the looks of it, they are taking a more streamline approach. Still in the back of my head bells and whistles are going off...paranoia at its best.

Wife's pc has an 1900xt running on 10.2. Thought 10.2 was/is rather ok considering the abilities of the card. Wonder how much longer the 6000 series are going to be packaged with the GCN card drivers. The only game I paid full price for was Skyrim. I still find myself going back to STALKER:SOC; only game that makes my card go above 65C.

It used to be that could only get three updates before having to reinstall the os to get CCC working properly again. Only thing that has changed, having had Vista for so long, I know all the registry keys and program folders left behind. Have yet to need to reinstall the os in over a year due to CCC.

Having grown up in a family of engineers; just cannot bring myself to go over to the green side.
