DDR3 Memory Forecast - Roadmap with X38 and X48 Chipsets

Post by Apoptosis »

I often get asked when DDR3 will become mainstream and on what platforms, but this slide from an internal memo at Intel shows that DDR3 should continue to grow as more chipsets come out that support this new memory technology - logical eh? more chipsets supporting DDR3 would of course mean more DDR3 modules being sold.

This chart shows the Total Available Market for DDR3 modules on the Intel side of things. This chart is from work week 33 (August 2007) and is no longer under NDA, so I've posted it for you to see. The Intel X38 Express Chipset was supposed to be launched in Sept 2007, so obviously Q3 didn't turn out like this. It is interesting to see the big gap between the X38 and X48 chipsets though. Looks like Intel is betting that the X38 does good, but from what I've heard some smaller motherboard companies are skipping out on the X38 chipset to wait for the X48 since they are coming out so close together...
