What is the best mem for my new comp

Post by OTIKA »

I am building a new PC. This will be my third one but first "gaming" PC. i was wandering what the best mem for gaming/ HD Video is.

My build so far is:
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Black Edition Processor
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Thermaltake W0131RU ATX12V / EPS12V 850W Power Supply
EVGA 512-P2-N773-AR GeForce 8600GTS 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card ~ X2
Thermaltake Xaser VI VG4000SWA Silver / Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case

I am thinking of trying to learn how to OC with this one. i think this should be good for that from what i have read.

Thank you.

800Mhz RAM is a nice sweetspot that allows some headroom for overclocking.

2GB+ is the amount you should be looking to get.

Here's a some good 800mhz like recommended above.

Nice set with a nice price, and has good overclockablity. I have had good experience with these.

I know you didn't ask but my 2cents on the build.

If you haven't already purchased that gear you might want to look into the 8800GT

The 8600s aren't great performers and even in SLI they can't match the 8800s

Here is a side by side comparison

(the 8800GT is better then the 8800GTS reviewed in the article) Not sure what you are paying but might be good to look into.

You probably don't need that much wattage from the PSU either. it does have a good MIR though so i can't argue.

thanks for the advice but i was looking at 4GB rather than 2.

i looked around newegg and found this:
OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB(2 x 2GB)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6820227269

is OCZ a good brand?

and as far as the PSU i wanted the 750 toughpower but couldnt find SLI modular. if anyone knows where to get please let me know.

But thank you again for your input.

OCZ is one of my favorite brands aswell (i get around to alot of computer)

I have never used those modules, but i have had great experiences with the reaper series.

$5 more, with tighter stock timings, and is a GREAT overclocker. (looks pretty too)

I believe this is the PSU you were looking for.

A good unit, has a good MIR, or else i would recommend another unit.

Here is a good PSU that is cheaper, with same wattage. This is a great buy unless modular cables is something you really want/

I would say 2GB Crucial Ballistix modules. They are the cheapest D9 memories available & are of great quality as always.
