When would 8GB be necessary...

A year or two ago I asked (in a different forum) when 4GB would be necessary... now its just standard! (For gaming that is...).

So I would like to know when would 8GB be worth having, as in when would 8GB of Ram be used at one time...

The easy solution is obviously multi-tasking, but I would like to know more spefically what types of programs would have to be running at the same time....

8gb ram is only really necesary when you are doing alot of video editing, or editing HUGE pics

It's not even that necessary for video editting. With Video editting you need 2GB and a fast HDD.

Photoshop editting very large res pics, CAD/CAM and some other specialised programs will use 4GB+
Also database servers, as (most) databases are run from memory, but it would want to be a large daabase with a lot of users accessing different parts of the database to require this.

You can thank vista that you need 4GB. On XP 2GB is plenty.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind 4GB sometime soon.

5.5gb is needed when watching a HD movie on VLC media player. Editing pics on photoshop compressing pics to a 7zip file. and browsing the web.

You look like a busy person :P

2GB for XP, 4GB for Vista, so I'd say 8GB for Windows 7 :)

Wouldn't 8gb and Vista 64 help with caching more of said game in memory?

To be honest, I think most games are completely cached at 4GB anyway.

With trying to run 8GB regular mobo's (i.e. not server ones), you start to run into problems with the chipset struggling to keep up with the amount of RAM.
Although chipsets are listed as 'supporting 8GB of RAM' in practice getting it to work will be a pain.

In 10 years we'll be laughing at 2gb and 4gb setups , probably 64-128gb of DDR5 at this rate

There are some articles in relation to this like this one from: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/9570 showing the performance gane in the application with more memory installed. And I am sure there are more. But most people do not do or run applications and the right O.S. to properly utilize more than two or 4 gig of memory. So it really comes back to what and how you are planning to use your system.
IE what O.S. will you use and what applications will you be using? Will said applications address more then 2 Gig of memory if so how mcuh can they use?
