2gb vs 4gb

I'm planning on upgrading yet again, but not sure to stick with 2gb or shell out an additional $50 for 4gb. Is there a noticable difference in the two? Obviously probably not for gaming save maybe 1-3 fps, but for like apps and movies?

I went from 2gb to 4gb so that in Photoshop Elements I could increase my Memory & Imaging Cache which seems to enable me to add large numbers of photos to my editor without the hard drive having to use swap files.

For me, going from 2GB to 4GB was like a night and day and with DDR2 being quite cheap, theres not reason not to get 4GBs of ram,.

One thing to keep in mind is you won't take advantage of all 4GB is you are not using a x64 OS.

yea... i'll probably pass on the 64 bit though, not enough compatibility yet. Maybe when Windows 7 comes out it will be more popular.

I have Vista 64x and it hasn't had any compatability problems. Do you have a lot of old hardware or something?

Some apps used by developers, artists, etc. may benefit, but for games and movies 2gb is definitely enough.

Do what I did and spend the extra dough to get a better video card or processor!

I use 2gb for everything, but I've also been beating around the idea of going to 4gb as soon as DDR3 becomes a little cheaper.

I would add that while I have agreed with you all about this there are some new games that seem to take advantage of more memory and have shown some improvment with 4 Gig of memory over 2 Gig. But it really depends on what and how you use the system and like you all I would still suggest 2 Gig for most users with few exceptions!

I was reading today that a few companies (OCZ I think) are coming out with 3gb dual channel memory sets for those folks that aren't upgrading to Vista, I'll have to see if I can find the link again.

The next one is something that made me scratch my head enough for it to bleed, a 3GB memory kit. OCZ has them in DIMMs and SO-DIMMs for the 32-bit OS upgrade market. Windows has a broken memory model, and can't see more than 3GB (technically a hair more), so OCZ is filling that niche. No more RMAs with "1GB doesn't work" on it, now you simply don't get that 1GB. It will be interesting to see how it works in the market, but we want to see a bundle with a three-core Phenom and three ATI GPUs just to play with people's heads.

I just ordered another 2GB, so I will be running 4 Gigs soon. It was $19.99 after $30 rebate ( ). I couldn't resist. The price was OK before taking off the rebate, so if I don't get it I am not too worried.

Here is a tip for newegg. Don't use the free 2-7 days shipping option. They use DHL, which sucks. I ordered on the 18th, and the package has been sitting in cincinatti for 3 days.

OCZ Platinum, eh? I just spec'd a 2gb kit of that for a client. I'm getting ready to make the call and tell them that their HP from Nov 9, 1998 is not worth upgrading and that it's time for a new machine. PII 400mhz, 96mb ram, onboard ATI graphics, "extra large 12.7gb" hard drive, and built in ZIP drive... just doesn't run as well as they'd like anymore. E7200, 2gb, 8600GT XXX, 250gb, and DVD burner should show a nice increase in performance. ;)

Yeah, it arrived just at the 7 day mark.

It seems to make everything run slower though. I have 2gigs of Corsair XMS2 and 2 gigs of the OCZ Platinum. I don't know if that is my problem, but it just seems slower in CoH.

I try to steer clear of voltage changes. I am afraid of frying something, and I don't really have the money to put into my computer right now. As much as I would love to buy a new MoBo, I really need to put away for a wedding.
