my pc3500 is geil golden dragon. I knew that geil was not the worlds best overclocker so i got ram that was about as fast as i figured i could get my fsb up to after doing LOTS of reserch. i have my ram clocked now at 442(221fsb) not steller but thats about right for an abit nf7-s with any type of ram.

you should run memtest86+ on it and see how many errors that your golden dragon memory throws.

http://www.memtest.org/

Let me know how many!

I ran the test at first when i got my rig, no errors at any settings, even OC'ed!

Geil isnt really for AMD systems, but the Golder Dragon series seems slightly better suited than the Ultra Platinum series....

pretty please run the updated version of memtest86+ again. I've seen several different sets of GEIL golden dragon and if your kit doesn't throw any errors it would be the first. I'm shocked in a good way.

ok here is my update: Tested using memtest86 v3.0

Code: Select all

fsb voltage errors test failed
200 2.7 2 5
217 2.6 43776 5
217 2.7 105625 5
221 2.7 26192 5
221 2.8 52755 5
221 2.9 88911 5
This ram is raited at 433. so any ideas suggestions (free ram) alternitive testing procedures

200 2.6 2-3-3-11 2 5
200 2.7 2-3-3-11 6 5

what are the original timings that your memory is supposed to run at?

also why not try 2.5-3-3-7; 1T?

try upping the voltage, Geil automatically say that use somwehere from 2.6 to 2.95, so ur under warranty all the way to 2.95 volts! Try 2.8 it seems the best.

Yeah like Immortal suggested I'd run it at spec timings at 2.95 or as close as you can get the voltage to the rated specs. Re-run it again and see if it is still throwing any errors.

i think 2.95 will be too high and the NF7 wont go that high. Try 2.8v first... thats what mines running at and all is fine! :)

One thing with geil is dont try to run it under tight timings, it will fail miserably.....

stock settings for this ram is 2-3-3-6, 2.65-2.95v. my mobo maxes out at 2.9. when i run memtest at the stock settings the ram fails. either i got bad sticks, unmatched sticks, or miss labled stics. some thing though is not right im getting far to many errors. At this point im contacting the retailer to look into what options i have. but for the time being i will keep testing. i think its safe to say STAY AWAY FROM GEIL. between your testing and what i have been doing today im very convinced that this company needs to reevaluate its testing procedures. Im going to hunt around some in other forums and see what people say.

also a side note when i tried to loosen the timings the system would not boot, clearly the geil likes tight timmings.

yeah like I stated before: It will run only at the advertised timings and speed. DO NOT expect it to do tighter/looser timings or overclock much above it's rating.

Let me know what you end up doing or if you want to know what other brands to look into!

My ram will not even run at the advertized speeds :( but the good news is GEIL has responded to my techsupport email. They seem to have a very quick and responseive support system that is a big time bonus for them. i will let you know if we can resolve things.

Well I'm glad to hear that your being dealth with in a timely manner. That is one thing I don't know about (GEIL customer service).

Let us know how they handle the situation and what you end up getting out of all this. (at least working memory)

heh
i have the geil value 3200 on my amd rig
popped my 2500 up to 2.4 ghz stable.

Ran memtest for probably 2 hours, completely no errors.

i had my 2500 @ 219 mhz fsb, then had to drop it cuz of temps, i have a crappy hsf.

I don't think Geil actually makes their value RAM.

well
if they dont make it, who does?

Deadly...

For example lets look at OCZ Memory... Do they own a plant? nope!! So that means they must hire a company or buy another companies memory and re-label it. Rumor has it ADATA and PMI make all OCZ's memory. It's fairly common in the industry. I know much more than this, but due to legal reasons I can't comment on most of it.

o i c
hmm
thats interesting considering that the quality of the ram should be the same.....

but its all good :)

the quality of the memory varies widely. IC's must be qualified and tested to run at the speeds they are labled to run.

For example if I want start a memory company I'll order a bunch of reference PCB's with lets say Hynix Rev C speed D5 IC's. After testing the batch of 500 modules I found that 10% of the modules will do DDR550, while 20% of the batch can do DDR533, while 100% of them can do DDR500.

So even though they are the same modules I have 3 speed grades with one original design. OCZ is very good at speed checking their modules and labeling them correctly.
