quite possibly, but if I'm not mistaken the BIOS is the arbitrator whenever you mix RAM, usually it will loosen the timing on the tighter-timed chip when on SPD or auto. Could just be a bad chip too...have him run Memtest86 to find out (test each stick individually, and through all tests, if any errors come up, the memory is more than likely bad). Try that first, and if there's no errors with either chip, then try to match the chips up to where both are the same (ie get another XMS chip).
