Underclocking

Post by Merlin »

I was wondering if a set of XMS 3700 could be slowed down to 400 Mhz and tighten the latency timings to sync with an Atnelon XP2800+ overclocked to 400 Mhz FSB. If so what timings could I resonably expect and what voltage should I use?

Yes you can run that ram at lower than raited speeds, and you may evern be able to lower the voltage. It looks like most of the XMS runs at 2.5v so you can keep it there or try a lower voltage. Test to see if its ok using prime95 that will tell you quickly if there is not enough voltage as the program will crash, or you will not be able to load windows, you will either get a BSOD or a black screen. if any of those happen give the ram some more voltage and that should stabilize it. As for timings try them out try 2-2-2-5 or 2-3-3-7 and see where its stable. Like overclocking you have to test for stablity.

From what I've seen with DDR ram it is all downward compatible to lower speeds. The biggest problem is that some of the high speed stuff won't get tight timings at slower speeds.......granted some will but if you're running a AMD system I think it's always best to use PC3200 ram...... 8)
