so for what I am getting, I want to get probably 512 or maybe 1 gb DDR2 ram for now but I notice there is a lot of different types and what not. currently I want something cheap(er), don't need to mod or OC right now, but I will upgrade and put more memory in. what I'm wondering is should I just throw in the cheap stuff for now and either just add more memory later or have to take it out and add more, so would it be better to get something more quality now or can I just save money and have it not really matter?

Personally, I'd go with Corsair ValueSelect. I've had really good results with them in the past, and you get quality and budget in the same deal!
But that's just my opinion. Corsair's my favorite memory brand, all three computers I have built recently have their sticks.

a value line from a name brand like Kingston or Corsair would be your best bet. Get 1GB now and when you can afford the good stuff you can purchase a 2GB kit of 800MHz memory down the road.
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 800 runs $139.99
or
OCZ S.O.E 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 800 runs $97.98
both of these kits will work great and run CL5 at 800MHz
