anyone know why it's so freaking difficult to use the nvraid0 on the dfi nf3 250 mobo?
i tried everything, but winxp install still showed up as having two drives. i FINALLY got winxp install to see one raid drive on install but then once the install was done botting for the CD to install and switched obver to the raid0 array it would give me a message stating "HAL is missing or corrupted please replace the HAL" or something to that effect.
and i still haven't figure that bs out yet.
my last dfi mobo nf2 UI has the Sil3114 and it was a breeze to use. easier than the old High Point Raid chip.

Last i knew the SATA ports 1-2 on most NF3 250's did not like overclocking. I know this was the case on the Gigabyte and MSI, and i think it was/is an issues on the DFI as well. if you want to overclock and do raid you need to keep the drives on ports 3-4.

well the 1&2 sta ports i already knew about from my research. the 1&2 ports are ran off the marvelle(sp) codec but uses the nf3 chipset to do the numbers.infinitevalence wrote:Last i knew the SATA ports 1-2 on most NF3 250's did not like overclocking. what i'm saying is that i was using ports 3&4 that are on thenv raid chip. it took me like 10 times of trying different way of getting the raid9 and the OS installed and once i got on track with it, it gave my the "REINSTALL MISSING HAL BLAH BLAH" message and wouldn't go past it.
was wondering if anyone else using th nv raid chip on the sata ports 3&4 is having the HAL problem i'm having.

Have you tried setting up the RAID BIOS? Once you have it setup in there, you can then boot to XP install, and then hit F6 to install the RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk.....the best place for information on DFI boards is http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/index.php
They're a great board, I'm been using one now for well over a year, with 3400+, 2x 36g Raptors in RAID_0, 2x512MB Corsair XMS3500 (BH-5), Albatron 6800GT, 550w Antec TrueControl, LianLi etc etc - I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

yes, i know how to set up a bios, i used the F5 and F6 switches during winxp install. before install i used nv raid (F4) to set up a single raid0 drive. everything installs fine off the CD but once i get to the install section where it boots off the hdd, it'll get right past the winxp logo screen, it fials to boot and gives a message about something having to do with the HAL. i've tried both F5 to set it at ACPI PC and then no F5 and let the instal choose it's own HAL.OsamaBinAthlon wrote:Have you tried setting up the RAID BIOS? so no one on this forum works with raid arrays? and windows installs?
do you know about HAL's at all? Hardware abstraction layer.
i can install using SATA Raid0, APIC off, F5 ACPI PC HAL, F6 Sil3114 raid0 drivers just fine and easy as can be with my DFI NF2 Ultra Infinity.
but i move over to NV SATA Raid0 and i can F4 make the raid0 array just fine, leave APIC ON, don't use F5 to pick a HAL, use F6 to install SATA RAID drivers, move on with the instal and once it's rebooted it stops with a message about a HAL error and to replace said HAL. this happens both when i use F5 and pick a HAL or not. both with APIC ON or not.
no one knows anything about this???
i'm the only owner that this has happened to?
maybe, who knows. i want my raid0 back.

o i do lots and lots of RAID arrays, but all mine are RAID5, RAID6, RAID01, RAID50.... And i never use the onboard controlers, ask about LSI or Adaptec bios's and i could help some but i cant do anything for you with the DFI
I can tell you this, i have never been able to move a RAID array from one controler to another unless they are identical, IE from a 4805SAS to another 4805SAS... your problem may be different controlers with different bios revisions. I would back up all your data to a seperate drive, create a fresh array on the Lanparty and install windows. then copy your data back.

ya, different controllers i know isn't the problem. i use my raid array as my OS and install drive as it's the fastest. so my os runs faster and my games load quicker.
i use my 160gig PATA drive for all my stuff i want saved. then i just kill the data on my raid0 and install a new winxp pro sp2 install for a refresh.
on the nv sata raid i was able to set up fine. so there's no raid array issues, it's the OS install that craps out on me telling me my HAL is corrupted and i need to replace it with the HAL on my CD. there's more specific info but i'm using generalities atthis point.
the nv sata/ide "south bridge" chipset can span raid across ide and sata it also does spare and JBOD and 0+1
it's an all in one-der chip, lol.
it's just once i get the install from CD part done and it tires to boot off the OS install for the windows setup is when the HAL issue comes up.
it's so wierd. i've tried all the things i could think of to try and resolve this issue. and it only happens with the nv sata raid chip.

no, i never overclock while installing.
1. i set the optimised defualts
2. i disable the onboard things i don't want to use to free up IRQ's
3. on my nf2/barton machine i would disable APIC in the bios, then hit F5 and F6 on the install so i can choose my HAL and specify my sata drivers. i set the HAL to ACPI (PC) instead of defualt Uniprocessor as it's only one cpu and a single core.
this is al after making a raid0 array of course and using the nv sata radi ports 3&4 insted of using the marvel raid chip, ports 1&2 as that sata chips bus is not locked and the nv sata raid chip has a 33mhz lock on it.
like i was saying before, i've tried the install all ways you can: without APIC enabled, no F5 HAL choice, with APIC no HAL, with APIC and HAL choice... no go. i even reset the bios to optimised defualts and did nothing but build the array and do the install like if i wasn't there... still soon as it tried to load from the hdd install it puts up a fuse about a HAL error.
this is using a tried and tru winxp pro slipstreamed sp2 burned CD. and no overclocking at all as my cpu defualts to 2,6ghz anyways.

only thing i can think of, is something a forum friend told me off another forum.it didn't have anything related to the problem i'm having, but he said to slipstrem in the nv sata raid drivers b/c people were having problems trying to get the instal to read off the floppy. but my floppy was queued up and read from during the CD part when i F6'd the spec.
maybe i just need to break down and do another iso and burn with the drivers already in whatever folder they're supposed to be in.
but there's another issue that i'm grappling with. see ifyou can help me here.
i have a winxp pro sp2 cd and i run dual raptor raid. now the problem is that i want either 8 or 16 cluster size for the least amount of slack on my drive. i set my raid up with either 16 or 32 stripe.
the problem is, sp2 won't let you change the cluster size from 4K. yes, you can take another spare drive, format it for whatever cluster size and during install choose "leave filing system alone" and continue the install. the problem with that using a sp2 cd is that once you get off the CD install and boot for the first time off the hdd to continue your install, you get an error message stating that you should use the "ctl alt delete" to restart and this happens over and over. it's an sp2 thing and the only cd i have is sp2.
there's a post on Abit forums that people have figured out a way around this by replacing several i386 files from either the orig cd or the sp1 cd.
the files are:
1) dmadmin.exe (dmadmin.ex_)
2) spcmdcon.sys (spcmdcon.sy_)
3) setupdd.sys (setupdd.sy_)
4) autochk.exe
5) autoconv.exe (autoconv.ex_)
6) autofmt.exe
7) untfs.dll (untfs.dl_)
and the link for the info is http://forum.abit-usa.com/showpost.php? ... stcount=17
some people say that using a partition program can change the cluster size after windows has been installed.
what do you make of this?

some people say that using a partition program can change the cluster size after windows has been installed.
what do you make of this?

honestly i dont know your getting to the tweaking point thats byond me, i dont bother changing cluster size because the performance hit/improvement is not worht it to me. I do enough video and graphic editing that a small cluster size woudl kill me.

ah, well the smaller the cluster size, the less slack in the filing system and the less slack in the filing system the quicker the heads can read the data. think of it as taking out the spaces inbetween the data cluster writes.
say i'm saving a 6K file, that would take two 4K cluster writes, this would mean that you have 2K slack, slack = zero data inside the cluster.
so what i'm tryingto tweak is the cluster size for the type of user activities that a person would do, like myself of course. i mostly use desktop 2D type stuff. i have a different computer for number crunching like transcoding or encoding.so i would want a smaller cluster size and with settingthe raid0 stripe mode is the same thing basically you son't want the raid controller to wit till it has 64K to wrtie to the raid array you want it more responsive to your work.
so most people use 16K Stripe / 16K Cluster. i think i'll use that for starters and might change it to 32K Stripe / 16K clusters if my system feels sluggish with the 16/16 setting. i read that 32/8 is good as well. so i dunno. lots of tweaking ahead.
there's only one problem, i can't change the defualt cluster size in the filing system to anything other than stock 4K.
ya know, it might do you good to change your cluster size to 16K since you're working with large filing writes.

well i have been playing with stripe sizes at work and i have noticed that using a cluster size thats the same size as the stripe size actual decreases performance because the stripe is not alwasy reading from the begining of the cluster.
Right now i am actauly having the best performance running 1mb stripes with the default NTFS cluster size. On my raid5 setup im running a sustained write of 90mb/s and sustained read of 120mb/s

1mb stripe? hmmm, i don't think the onboard stuff actually goes any higher than 128k stripe.
but yah, i'm going to play around with stripe and cluster sizing. but thats once i resolve the install HAL issue and then the sp2 4K cluster lock.
those are the two pressing issues that i have not found enough info out or a way to fix the issues.
