Memory issues with MSI K9N SLI Platinum....

Post by HONkUS »

Im running it with 2gb of Patriot ddr2 667 and im having memory errors left and right, I updated the bios and then windows wouldnt start but the system would still post.

Im worried that my mobo is being picky about myRAM im trying to install windows again right now but its not cooperating, it keeps hanging at different points. does anyonw have any ideas?

Try using just one stick of ram to start with....

Have you tried all the Dimm slots?? Increased the memory and or chipset voltage a little?

ok another question I was poking around in my bios and what the heck are TRRD and TRC timings?

EDIT: I found what my TRC should be but now I need to know what my tRRD should be for 4-4-4-12 ddr 667 memory

just start by setting everythign to auto (or spd), that way you will run at manufacture's specs and no OC. Then run memtest to see if you see any errrors. If you are still encountering problem but memtest says fine, try to increase the latency a litttle (sometimes the timing might be too aggressive for the syste).

When you said that you update the bios and windows won't start, does that mean that before your bios update, the system was running stable? Did you remember to clear the bios and manually set all the timing/settings in bios?

The system was not running stable before I updated the BIOS windows was corrupting itself, explorer kept getting errors and ending itself so I go updated the bios and after that windows wouldnt start, after it got to the windows boot screen I would get a blue screen. now im trying to install widnows again and it when it is copying files it will periodically be unable to copy a file but will get it when i hit retry but then when it it installing the files it will hang at random points. There are no spd settings with this mobo it either goes auto or manual.

Auto is SPD!!!
BUT the board might not set the correct settings on auto!

Try:Tras as ~14 / Trc as 15 / Trfc as ~17 or 19 /Trrd as ~3-4

Maually set the Max async and read preamble to 5.5ns or 6ns and 7ns respectivly

Alot of early bios's on boards have probs with setting the above timings way too tight...

:EDIT:
Your using DDR2 so everything I just said could be wrong

Just noticed something.

The v1 of the BIOS has the default voltage for my memory as being 1.85 where as the v1.1 of the BIOS has my memory at 1.8v, could this of had something to do with why windows wouldnt boot after updating to the v1.1 of the BIOS?

Add 1.9v-1.95v to be sure........The ram will take upto and over 2v.

after 2.2v you should think about cooling

Now I get the NTFS.sys blue screen of death when my memory is at 1.95v :(

Im HOPING my memory was getting errors before when I formatted to NTFS and it didnt do a thurough job of formattign the drive so right now I am re-formatting the drive to NTFS.

Did I mention that ive been trying to get this to work for the last 2 days now and that im at a lan party and I cant freakin play anything lol

Your mobo has no fan on the chipset? Does it get very hot to touch? (be carefull)

Try 1.85v again on the ram, then lower the chipset voltage a little.
If this helps, the chipset could be overheating --> Arctic Silver ;)

If it makes things worse, try 2v on the ram.

well the HS can literally burn you but this is the norm for this board according to all who own it, where as other manufacturers put copper heat pipes and fins on their nb this just has a little POS aluminum HS that gets VERY HOT, ive positioned a high flow 80mm fan on it tilted between my empty pcix16 and my pcix8, ive moved my vid card to the lower slot (pcix8) because I really didnt like it getting that close to somethign that hot, so im trying AGAIN to install windows with the high flow fan going full blast on the HS

have you try running 1 stick at a time and try different slots? Have you try to run memtest first before even attempted to load windows?

Well I got my new ASUS board and im having the same problem which means its RAM but its wierd because this RAM will run completley stable at 400mhz but anything higher then that will crash it what does that mean?

The DIMM's are rated for 667mhz so im lost
