Budget "mainstream" AMD Socket 939 System

Post by Apoptosis »

I was looking at newegg today and saw some killer prices on some hardware... This would make a great part time work/gaming PC for any family. It would be able to play all the latest game titles at decent resolutions too!

Nate's February AMD Powered Price Versus Performance System:

$79 - ECS NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset Motherboard
$190 - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester (90nm)
$185 - XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3
$127 - Mushkin Dual Pack 184-Pin 1GB PC-3200

Total Core Build: $581

Add in a new SATA hard drive and a new case w/ a power supply and you are looking at --

$57 - Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
$111 Antec SONATA ATX Mid Tower Case w/ 380W PSU

Grand Total: $749 + your old optical drive

bottom of the barrel bad. Lets put it this way, stores like Fry's bundle them with processors for specials, and mark the prices like $10 over the processor cost. They have a serious issue with capacitors and stability...Other than that...I just won't recommend something that bad to a member.

ECS is not all that bad, right now for nForce3 mobos the are one of the top choises by overclockers. Now part of this is due to the fact that there are no good AGP choicses for skt 939, and the fact that the MSI neo2 seems to be hit or miss when it comes to quality.
