No floppy disk controller on MSI Mobo
No floppy disk controller on MSI Mobo
I have just built a new computer using a MSI KM4AM-V mobo.
There is no floppy.
The device manager in XP Pro. tells me,
" This device can not start Code 10 "
I have installed a differant OS so it is not in the OS.
Is this a motherboard problem or a BIOS problem?
Of course I can not flash the BIOS as I have no floppydisk drive.

According to MSI site, you do have a floppy controler, you may have to go into the bios and reset/set it to on. If that doesn't work, the MoBo/Bios may be bad.

On-Board Peripherals
On-Board Peripherals include:
- 1 floppy port supports 2 FDDs with 360K, 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M and 2.88Mbytes.
- 1 serial ports (COM 1) and COM2 on board with pin header
- 1 VGA port.
- 1 parallel port supports SPP/EPP/ECP mode.
- 8 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (Rear x 4 / Front x 4)
- 3 audio (Line-In/Line-Out/Mic) ports.
- 1 RJ-45 LAN jack

Yes, As I said I get a "code 10" on the controller.Bio-Hazard wrote:According to MSI site, you do have a floppy controler, you may have to go into the bios and reset/set it to on. If that doesn't work, the MoBo/Bios may be bad.

Which means it is probably an IRQ problem.
6 is the assigned IRQ to all floppys. You can not change it.
I have the latest version of the BIOS for the mobo.
I have a feeling it is in the mobo.
I thought of flashing the BIOS anyway from the MSI live update site.
But then the Warranty will probably be "VOID."
I've only had the mobo 5 days today.
Bio-hazard, have you seen this in a mobo before.
Now I have no USB eather.
I think the motherboard is bad.

I can't do it the old way. No floppy disk controller.Apoptosis wrote:James,
Welcome to the forums... Just curious have you flashed the BIOS before? I'd persoanlly flash the BIOS, but I'd not use the live update. Get the floppy disk out and do it the old school way ;) See if that clears things up. MSI will not void your warranty if you flash the BIOS.
I flashed the BIOS from the live update on the MSI web site.
I can't use the floppy on that machine. I am getting a code 10 on that controller." This device cannot start code 10".
As soon as I flashed the BIOS I got all my USB.
I still have the Floppy disk controller problem though.
Now that I have flashed the BIOS, should I do another clean install of the OS?
I have multi. computers so formatting the HD is not a problem.
I have searched the BIOS and cannot find anything else that has been assigned 6 for the IRQ.
I'm not even sure it is an IRQ problem with the floppy disk controller.
There are many reasons for a code 10. IRQ is the most common.
I'm going to search more forums today and study some more.
Any suggestions on this floppy controller problem would be appricated.
I have nothing installed on the mobo but the HD,CD,and floppy.
I might try to put the CD on the same cable as the HD and do a clean install again.
I'm running out of options here.
I'm installing a different floppy cable too.
Thank you for the input.
Well I installed a Win ME OS on the mobo.James wrote:I can't do it the old way. No floppy disk controller.Apoptosis wrote:James,

In device manager it said everything was fine.
When I tried to explore a floppy, it froze the computer up.
I replaced the floppy and cable with some that I know are good.
Same thing. Freezes the comp.
I pulled the mobo out and packaged it back up.
I will return it tomarrow for an exchange.
I hope it doesn't take too long to get another one.

I'd go back to Windows XP Pro! Windows ME was the most bugged version of any Windows OS ever released.
I'm guessing that the floppy drive works on other PC's just fine...
A floppy cable that was known to be good was used...
Try a couple different power connectors...
Make sure the cable is the correct way... If the light stays on it's backwards.
Try flashing the BIOS with a USB key or live update...
Make sure the floppy drive is turned on in the BIOS...
Thats it! Windows XP Pro should install the proper drivers, so drivers are not the issue.
Must be a bad motherboard!

A couple of things tyou might want to do before you write off the board.
1. Pull the floppy cable, make sure there are no bent pins on the board or the actual FDD, sometimes people put the cables on wrong and bend a pin, another issue is that sometimes the included FDD cable has no slot to line up the correct side, I've been guilty of that and it can do what you are describing.
2. Reset the board, pull the battery, clear the CMOS, unplug everything, then reboot and see if by chance that somehow the IRQ was screwed up.
Just a couple of trouble shooting ideas, youd be surprised sometimes that it is a rather simple problem that gets overlooked.

I have flashed the BOIS from the live MSI website.capper5016 wrote:A couple of things tyou might want to do before you write off the board.

No the cable is not backwards, there are no bent pins,I have tried other plugs from the power supply.
I have tried everything you suggested.
I have tried three installs from XP, Win98, and ME.
I have not removed the battery to reset the CMOS. I just flashed the BIOS.
The BIOS is set to boot from the floppy after the CD-Rom.
The OS does not see the floppy at boot up.
The floppy is turned on in the BIOS.
If it were not turned on, would it lock up the computer?
I have never seen the floppy lock up a computer.
If it were defective,it just would not work. The problem is NOT with the with the floppy disk drive or the cable.
I have checked the power supply. Amps and volts are good.
I will try one more install with XP Pro. before I return the mobo.
But I truely feel the mobo is defective. Everything points to that case.
If it walks like a duck and looks like duck it is probably a duck.
I have spent many many hours trying to fix this floppy drive problem.
As you suggest, I will try one more install.
Now you have me wondering again.
I will keep you all posted.
Thanks a ton for the help.

Does turning the floppy controller (FDC) off in the bios cause the computer to run without errors?
and are you getting this code 10 before the OS starts to load? ... or is it the OS that is giving you the code 10 error?
If it is the OS giving you the error, can you still boot to a floppy?... it should boot to a floppy before the comp starts to load the OS.

No the floppy was completely dead.Illuminati wrote:Does turning the floppy controller (FDC) off in the bios cause the computer to run without errors?

The computer could not install the "Floppy Disk Controllers."
No controller no workie.
I returned the Mobo yesterday and they replaced it for me.
It is installed and running as it should.
Thank all of you for your time and kindness trying to help me.
I appricate your effort.
Now for the overclocking question.
I am running an AMD Sempron 2500+ in a MSI KM4AM-V
1 gig PC3200 DIMM.
My CPU is running at about 87 degreese farinhiet under say web search.
I have the alarm set at 128 degreese farinhiet.
If I set my jumpers at 200 FSB, what temp will I be looking at?
I installed all the new parts for this new computer in a W1640 emachines case. I'm not sure if there would be a problem with air flow.
Although I did install a new case fan. As emachines did not install one when the computer was new. ( 2 year old computer. That Mobo isn't 6 months old.)
