Northbridge

Post by Merlin »

Dumb question, What is a Northbridge? Is that the bridge between the CPU and the chipset? and how likely is it that I have a Barton 2800 that will only oveclock a little? I thought all unlocked 2800 Barton CPUs were capable of the same degree of overclocking.

The chipset is comprised of the northbridge, in your case a nVidia nForce2 ultra 400, and a south bridge, where all the usb, sound, and other stuff connects to the computer. the northbridge in an nf2 system connects the cpu to the system memory and to the southbridge. the southbridge connects the system to the pci buss and all the verious system components.

And don't forget the Northbridge also connects the AGP to the CPU and memory. On a Socket A motherboard, its gonna be the only chip on the motherboard that has a heatsink of some kind on it ;)
