Guys its me Merlin...my puter is down right now and I can't get any info off it so I had to create a new ID here to get your help. I have an Aspire 500W power supply with a 20 pin main power connector. My new Main board has a 24 pin...my connector will go in leaving the top 4 pins on the board open. The board is a DFI ultra-D. The instructions in the box for this board really suck.
The board also has another power socket that is the same as one on an HDD but nothing tells me what its for or IF I should connect it or not. PLease help ASAP....I have new mother board new CPU and new vid card but can't do nothing till someone answers me

Jax,

A 20-pin ATX power supply should be able to get the system to post, but I highly advise investing in a 24-pin power supply ASAP as you don't want to damage the board. The additional header on the board is more than likely for video cards, so if you have a high end video card go ahead and plug it in... It's not 100% needed though.

Welcome to the forums.

How much money are you willing to drop down on one?

On-board molex is for running dual high-end vidcards.

the 4 remaining pins on the 24-pin connector are 3.3v, 5v, 12v, and ground. there are numerous adapters out there that will let you use your current PSU, but I'd recommend against it.

To answer your question Razorback....I just dropped $485 on Mother board,CPU,Vid card and monitor so I really don't have anything left to spend but I will find a way to get by somehow. As for the adaptor...why would you recommend against it?? I don't see that I have many options here. I can either take a chance and run it as is ( which it does seem to work fine) or I can let $ 485 sit on my desk till I have another $100+ ( thats what they seem to cost) for a good power supply.

because the boards and psus have a habit of frying each other, especially in the case with that DFI Board. Saw many a horror story. It just boggles my mind that people will spend so much money on other parts, and when it comes to the one thing that has the capacity to destroy your entire rig, they skimp on

Well my PC is up ( of a sort) so thanks for the help. I will have to spring for a new PSU VERY soon. I now have software problems so I will ask about that in another section.
