SATA2 on SATA connector

My motherboard "Shuttle AB60n" has SATA connector. Could I connect a hard disk drive which has SATA2? So, the question is: does SATA motherboard support SATA2 hard drive? :roll:

I'm not 100% sure it does, but the best case scenario is that you will only be getting the performance of SATA if both parts do not support SATA2. So if you are spending extra money for an SATA2 hard drive over a SATA hard drive, you will not get the performance boost of SATA2.

I say I'm not 100% on the compatibility because I think I vaguely remember something quirky about the SATA to SATA2 transition... Like I thought I heard that either the SATA2 hard drive is not backwards compatible with SATA, or the SATA2 motherboard is not backwards compatible. Does anyone else know this answer for sure?

SATA2 drives work fine with SATA1 controllers!

If it doesn't you can use a boot disk (get it from HDD manufacturers site)... you can then disable SATA2 specs

SATA2 is 100% backwards compatible with SATA

Thank you guys for this advices. The diference in price is 5 euros but this helped me. So if somebody know something else for this problem I want to know about others experiences in this section and if I find out something else about this topic I will post it here.

since SATA2 is backward compatible and the price difference is onlz 5euros, I would get the SATA2 and when you update your mobo some time in the future - voila! your HDD would perform faster...

Today's hard drives don't use all the bandwidth of SATA I, so they wouldn't be any faster if they used the SATA II interface.

i have tried same sata2 on sata 1 motherboard (gigabyte) but no luck played even with bios.
anyone have any advice on that.

Yes, SATA2 hard disk drives work perfectly on a motherboard having SATA1 controllers. The only thing that you would need to do is set the jumper on the back of your hard drive. Some drives like those from Seagate has the jumper set by default so that the drive is forced to work on SATA1. If you remove the jumper the drive would again work as SATA2. Refer to your hard drive manual to find out the exact position of the jumper. Absolutely no doubt that your SATA2 HDD would be backward compatible with SATA1.
