Wacky USB connectors.

Post by smack323 »

I just threw another computer together for my friends girlfriend. I did a fresh install of XP - after doing this the USB mouse didnt work on the back USB connections. I thought it might just have been a driver issue so i installed the drivers that came with the mother board. now the keyboard does not work either in any of the back USB connections. However the front two USB slots do work. can anyone think of something that might be happening that would cause the back USB slots to stop working? I did get the newest drivers off the ECS website so i am fairly sure these are not the problem.

** just a bit more info when its booting up for a split second i can see it say something posiblle like cmos error hit F1 - not sure if this could be in anyway related- and it boots so fast i cant really see what it says exactly. Might be nothing at all **

strange... I'm guessing the rear USB connectors worked during OS installation?

Be sure that default settings are enabled in the BIOS and try re-installing the chipset drivers... If it's an Intel board the INF drivers install the USB drivers and might have screwed up during installation... That's the only thing I can thing of on a system that a fresh install was done on.

Are all the USB controller things showing up as installed ok in the device manager?

Check out the BIOS and somewhere there will be a USB emulation (or something USB) that will let you change between the BIOS controlling the USB and the OS controlling the USB. See if changing that helps.

ok thanks for the suggestions guys. i'll give it a try after work.. its a nvidia chipset.

i know the keyboard was working then between service pack 3 and the video card drivers i lost it..

I also notice it said when i plugged in to the front that a 2.0 device was plugged into a 1.0 USB slot. - that was strange since its a newer board. supports core2due, 1333 fsb ect. wish i had the model number off hand..

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downlo ... =6&LanID=9 pretty sure these are the drivers for the board. I didnt see anything on ECS website to download USB controllers- is that even something that needs to be installed? Or would it just be included with to chipset drivers.
