What Motherboard do i need?

Post by kennyboizhere »

Ok here's me problem. I had a friend build me a computer as i don't know very much about building one. I moved from my old location and no longer have contact with him. Just as soon as it was built i've had the same problem which is the computer will just reboot itself at random(mostly when i watch videos or try to play a game).

I took it into geeksquad and they told me it was my Operating system. Had Windows XP but now I have Windows Vista Home Premier. It turns out that i'm having the same problem. They've ran a hardware diagnostic and it seems nothing is wrong with any of my memory or whatever else they look at. They also wiped my hard drive and everything so i know its not a virus. Now they are saying that they think the motherboard is malfuntioning, keyword "think".The computer is fairly new. Built in June 08 but has only been used about 5 or 6 times due to the problem. I just wanna be able to to play the newer games and watch movies and surf the net.

All in all, i just want to know whats a good motherboard to get for my setup. I'm being told to get an ASUS but don't know which type to get and if it will even be compatible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is what i have on it.

Just curious where do you live? If you are local to anyone here on the forums I know they'd help you out since the 'professionals' are unable to figure it out.

Since the PC only restarts during games or video watching you can take an educated guess and say that the problem is your video card or video card driver... not the OS

The GeForce G92 has been known to have some issues, so no big shocker with the problems that you are seeing. Is the card still under warranty? If it is you should RMA the card.

You shouldn't have to spend money and you don't need a motherboard as this is likely your video card.

I live in Tacoma WA. Actually its not only when i watch movies or play games but also when i'm downloading or pretty much anytime (Completely random). Recently i have a hard time just getting my system to boot up. Maybe cuz it's restared so many times? I'm trying to find someone someone to look at my computer so that i can get a definite answer. I'm so tired of getting answers of "well it could be this" or "i think it might be that".

If it is as you say and it is my Video card. Whats a good card?(not sure if this post should be in another thread)

Oh. So far i've replaced my RAM, OS and Hard Drive trying to figure this problem out.. hahaha

Oh and all the parts that i listed are no longer under any type of warranty. I got it all from newegg and i think there policy is 30 days.

Sounds like geeksquad are just trying to get you to spend money you didn't need to :(

You don't need to buy a new card, or motherboard to replace the ones you have. Because they are under a year old, you are still covered by waranty (the 30day policy is probably for a swap no questions asked kind of thing).

Faults with motherboards are hard to track down, and usually the only way to identify them is through checking everything else is working properly (which can in itself be misleading if the mobo is malfunctioning).

As you've changed so much in your system and are still getting problems, I'd go with RMA'ing the motherboard first, then the GPU if it still doesn't work properly after that.

Yeah thanks! I just re-read the policy on the site and it seems your right. I just hope that they'll let me RMA it. I dont have the box or any of the original packaging. I'll have to call their customer service when they open.

you shouldn't need the box as long as the warranty sticker and serial number tags are still on the card and it hasn't been tampered with!

As for your system having a hard time starting and stuff like that (which you didn't mention in the original post), I guess it could be the motherboard... You really need to trouble shoot this with a known good video card, but you got to do what you can!

Good luck with Newegg!

It being a corsair, I'm willing to blame something else first.

I'd have blamed the memory intially, but as it's been replaced (and a new OS put on), odds are it's the mobo.
