Intel to use ATI chipsets

We heard this before... some doubted if it would happen... but Intel have confirmed (according to eetimes), that they will use ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Chipsets!!!

Intel placed information about its D101GGC motherboard, which uses ATI's Radeon Xpress 200 chipset, on its reseller website Monday. An Intel spokesman declined to comment about the product, beyond saying Intel plans to use third-party chipsets in some of its motherboard but has yet to reveal which ones.......This is the first time Intel has used a third-party chipset on its branded motherboard. The move is intended to ease supply woes for systems builders who have been struggling to compete with low-cost desktops from Dell, some systems builders said.....

Next we will have Cyrix making a comeback and making GPU's instead of those cpu things they used to make
Is it me or has the whole IT industry gone mad lately?? I undestand why Intel didn't ask Nvidia for their chipsets.... But ATI?? surely SIS / ULI would have being a better choice - budget solution?

The express has a decent built in video core, my guess this is why intel is looking at the solution as their gfx are rather poor even on the low end.

That, and since chipset profit margins are rather low...

Well... it could also be to try and kill off VIA (VIA/Cyrix/Centaur) for good.

Especially considering VIA's recent offerings of nanoITX form factor motherboards which would be in direct competition for Intel's future plans of miniature PCs like AOpen's "Pandora".

Those C7 processors could really give the Pentium M a run for its money if it became popular, maybe not in terms of speed, but definitely power consumption. Would be a killer in the laptop market, 99% of laptop users are not going to need the speed a Pentium M would offer, but an x86 CPU that can run at less than 1W and maxes at 20W would definitely be worth looking into.
