Need help choosing!?!

Post by camaroguy1998 »

I've been an AMD fan for several yrs now and havent paid too much attention to Intels offerings. I'm getting ready to build a new comp and was all set to go AMD (crosshair & 5600 or 6000) but, after reading Nate's $185 CPU review I feel the need to do a little more research before I commit to anything.

My question is what Mobo would you guys choose for a new Intel build, say with an E6300, 6400 or 6600?
We could take that a step farther and say which combo of Mobo and CPU would you guys choose?
Stability, Speed and OCing are the main factors I'm looking at.
As far as OCing goes I want to play with it but pulling every last mhz out of it is not my goal. Something decent with stability is where I'd like to be!

As for price I'd like to stay at the same level as the crosshair or cheaper!
The crosshair is currently going for $240-250

As with all motherboards you will read plenty of pro & con.

I personally am very happy with my Intel D975XBX2. Overclocks very easily, has Intel support and has been stable and thus far trouble free for me.

Thought about using an EVGA 680i but found far more issues posted on that board than on my XBX2.

Read some good things about the Asus Striker Extreme, but far too expensive for my budget.

I've got an ASUS P5B Dlx and haven't had a single issue. Very easy to setup, overclocks like a champ and even the inbuilt wifi card is good (has linux support too ;))
680i boards run too hot and use too much power IMO.

I must admit I'm kind of a 965 chipset fan.

I think the Asus P5B-Deluxe is a good choice.

I'm really liking my super cheap MSI P6N SLi board (650I chipset) right now it's around $110 or so on Newegg.

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 revision 3.3

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128012

VERY happy with the board - can overclock to 3.2 ghz on a Freezer Pro 7 heatsink/fan and temps have never been above 60C

Mike

oh that is with a E6400 cpu

I must second Sparky on the XBX2. The BOX version is $199.00 at TigerDirect and has a 3 year warranty (wherever you get it ensure that it is the BOX and not BLK as the BLK only has a 1 year warranty).

Paired with a C2D E6600 I can very easily reach 3.2g at stock voltages and the board is solid as a rock with fine temps (Thermaltake Big typhoon cooler). I haven't really tried to go much higher but with tweaking I'm sure I could go to 3.4 without any problems, I just don't feel like tweaking as the system is fast as crap now and I don't need to. You won't get the insane FSB you can get out of the 965/680i/650i boards but with higher multi CPUs that's much less of an issue

So, in short, XBX2 and E6600 or E6700 (prices just dropped a great deal on both) would be a good bet.
