D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
Hi everyone !
i think i did something wrong with my xbx2 ...
I perviously had a perfectly working (well, excpt for the KB problme of course ...) with a E6600 and 2*1G Corsair memory.
Yesterday, i decided to get a Q6600 (G0) and 2*2G of g skill memory.
Turns out my computer won't boot anymore (i was not overclocking with my old E6600)
When i tried to boot, the power led came on, but nothing, not fans, nothing .. when i hold the power button for 4s, the computer came off.
I started to unplug everything, put back my E6600 and memory, nothing more.
Today, i tried t boot, fans are turning, and i noticed a red light came on just next the 1x4 connector. Problem is, i don't know what it means
Just to tell you everything, i only put bakck a boxed fan on the cpu, not even plugin it tight.
So i'm wondering what the red light means ... i'll try right now to secure the CPU fan a little more just in case the led mean it's to hot in here ^^
If anyone can help me i would really appreiate it, hope my mobo didn't die (i wouldn't know why ...)
Thank you all !!

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
well, nothing new ... i took everything out of the box just in case, tried with the E6600, Q6600, corsair and g skill, still nothing ...
no beep, all fans at 100%, nothing on screen :/
I also tried removing the battery for more than 1 hour, nothing
setting the bios jumper configuration to "normal", "configuration", nothing ...
i'll try removing this jumper but i think it will only boot on a floppy containing a bios, right ?
Oh, i forgot something, i was using bios 2802.
thanks for any help i'm starting to think about getting a new board :/

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
i finally tried to use a recovery disk, just in case, but the floppy doesn't seem to react
I contacted intel support, waiting for an answer .. in any case i hope this qualifies for warranty
if you have any other syuggestion, please tell me !
thanks !!

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
are you even getting the post screen? what about booting with your old memory kit.
Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
no post screen at all, my LCD LEDs remain orange :/
I tried with my old memory and old CPU.
I do have a DQ6 in use in another computer, but i'm afraid to break it as weel, it's not really mine ^^ plus i don't know about the bios, i don't know if it would accept neither the Q6600 nor the G Skill memory
thanks for your answer !!!

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
ok it's getting really messy ...
today i tried to set mu thermalright ultra90 instead of the intel boxed fan, and my mobo boot ...
so i tried the Q6600 and memory, no problem here.
Really i don't know what i did different yesterday !
Anyway, i jute replaced the board insid the case, testing each time i plug drives, cards etc .. no problem.
Last try : i close teh case, now nothing works again ... my mobo just reboots endlessly ..........
so i put it out of the case again, and no change ... i'm really starting to think the board is defective ...
i removed the battery for the night, i'll see about the problem next tuesday ...
i'm no expert, but doesn't it seems like something is grounded ?
I have to say, each time the mobo starts, the red led flickers, is that normal ?
thanks

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
Check all power supply cables, those connected and those not.
Make sure the ones not connected aren't touching anything to cause a short.
Also look for any loose items.
Last, but not least, make sure you didn't crack the motherboard while installing the fan.
I quite sure you're right in suspecting a grounding problem. Also, you need to find out what the red led on the MB means; check the manual, or call Intel. I'd look at mine, but it's late and getting sleepy.
Good luck.

thanks for the answer !
I'm really suspecting i cracked the MB while installing the fan ... i must admit, when i installed the CPU and its fan, i didn't remove the board from the case so the MB probably didn't like it ... i always did this in the past, never had problems ....
I'll try checking the PSU cables but i'm prety sure i did that already :/
just one last thing : when the ultra90 is installed, the motherboard seems curved a little ...would the ultra90 be a mobo killer ? ^^
i'll buy another mobo, and try to send this one to intel for RMA ...
about the red led, i would say it is the CPU overheating led

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
If you suspect an overheating problem:
1- Set the CPU at it's default settings; if you're overclocking
2- Check to make sure the thermal paste and heat sink is correctly installed.
3- Also make sure you have the correct ram and it is correctly installed.
4- Look for any "loose" wires/cables.
I'm not familiar with 3 party cooling products, as i've yet to get one for my CPU...however, I wouldn't wont one that "bends" the MB! Did you install it correctly; is there supposed be be a spacer between it and the MB. Did you read the instructions, and do you have all the parts required! And again, look at the instructions for it and your MB manual.
When all else fails...read the manual.
I'm not saying you didn't do these already...but...if you didn't...
Good luck

Re: D975XBX2 boot problem : red led ?
Hi
Indeed i was not overclocking !
the CPU is installed corectly (the mobo finally worked for a few minutes, before it rebooted endlessly), no spacer (does it still exist ? i thought it was only for the duron and athlon processor back then), and the cooler is installed corectly.
I think i'm going to look to another cooler, but it's really hard to find something that fits a lot of mobos. But just for info, i never heard such problems with Thermalright coolers ...
thanks anyway, during all that time i wrote to Intel, and they said to me yesterday that my mobo qualifies for RMA :/
I didn't take a look yet, but how does it work ? do they send another mobo before we send ours (ok, i know i'm too old to dream ^^), and how long does it take ? i suppose i'll have to pay for the shipment ? are there several return addresses (i'm from France ...) ?
Still, i'm thinking about getting maybe a X38 + DDR2 board, but i'd like an intel board ... plus the new pipe-cooling systems won't be good with my case, since the mobo is fixed upside down, southbridge may suffer ... I'm telling this because, i don't know if it's a coincidence, but my RAID/AHCI mode on my old DQ6 stopped working suddenly (and if i'm correct, all this stuff is managed by the southbridge ?)
Anyway, thank you all, i hope it won't take long, can't wait to really test my Q6600 and 4G of g skill !!
