I've used the GIGABYTE P35C-DS3R Motherboard while visiting with Gigabyte for a bit and it seemed okay. I didn't get a chance to play with the DDR2 and DDR3 slots though.

There are no major issues with the P35C that I know of, it overclocks as well as the rest of the P35 Gigabytes. ;) The only thing I might personally gripe about is that Gigabyte has not released BIOS updates for any of their boards recently, which is completely unlike them. These boards do still require some good BIOS tuning regarding RAM performance and have some minor bugs left to be fixed as well. Last I heard Gigabyte was past the F5i or F5j beta BIOS in their testing.

thinking of getting the ds3l version for a budget htpc. anyone have experience with those? for a sub 100$ p35 board, it isnt that bad considering the new x38 chipsets thats about to come out.

The X38 is high end only. They will likely never drop below $200, or not until something even better comes along at a good price.
The "L" versions have the Jmicron chip removed, so two less SATA ports and no RAID ability. Otherwise they are the same boards, so they should work well.
