D975XBX 8GB not working

When installing 8GB into my D975XBX it gives me 3 beeps.

I tried Kingston KVR667D2N5K2/4G which is on Kingstons compatibility list for that board and Patriot PDC24G5300LLK .
All memory settings are set to automatic. I managed to get into bios sometimes and saw that 8GB were detected and all settings looked OK.
4G of Kingston KHX6000D2K2/2G have been working fine for months.

Does anybody habe the D975XBX working with 8GB?

never tried more than 4GB to be honest... I have to ask why 8GB... That is a ton of memory to be honest.

Intel says it does support up to 8 GB of system memory, but doesn't say at what speed... maybe reduce it from 800MHz to 667Mhz in the BIOS to see if that helps with the stability issue.

I'm also very curious...why 8Gb? :-k

This MB does not work with 2 GB modules. Look at page 21 of your manual.

One GB modules only. 1GB x 4slots= 4GB's MAX.

I want 8GB because I work with virtual machines running in parallel a lot.

According to Intel it definitely should support 8GB:
Supported DIMM Configurations
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboar ... 026567.htm

I tried:
- changing the voltage from 1.8 to 1.9.
- running the memory on 667Mhz.
- one and two modules only (two moules in the blue or black slots alway give 3 beeps, one module sometimes)

The power supply has 580W. 1 graphics card and 3HDs are connected only.

Interesting, Intel doesn't seem to know what either of their two hands are doing. They were claiming support for 1333 FSB for a few hours as well.

I only see Micron modules that were tested in that link you provided and I also note they are limited to 1024 in size and 667 in speed?

Edit: Have you updated to the latest BIOS? I think you should email tech support and get an answer from the horses mouth on this one as the manual doesn't claim support for 2GB modules.

I'd contact Intel for support on this one. If they don't get back to you i'll contact some people there for you.

I am in contact with Intel support.
The suggested clearing the CMOS and restoring defaults.

I will try that on the weekend event though I dont understand how this could help.

Hello
I have the same problem with my D975XBX and 8GB Kingston RAM.
Did you find any solution?

Thank you for your help.

Intel support suggested to remove the CMOS battery and reset the bios:
I did remove the battery for 30Min.
I booted with 2*2GB in the blue sockets: 3 Beeps, unable to get into
Bios settings.
I replaced the 2GB Modules with 2*1GB: system booted fine.
I reset to Bios default and reset my settings: System booted fine into Vista.
I inserted 2*2GB again: No beeps, no video, green mainboard leds are
on, CPU fan spins shortly and then turns off.
I used the 1GB modules again: same symptoms.
I removed the battery for 30Min again, removed all ram modules and the graphics adapter: same symptoms.
All power cables are connected.

Any ideas, what could be wrong?

Some additional information:
- On delivery the board gave a CMOS battery error. I replaced the battery with
a new one and the error went away.
- The board always booted painfully slow: 15+ seconds until the Logo display
(with primary raid on secondary raid off)

Does anybody have the D975XBX working with 8GB?
To me it looks like, in contrast to its specification, does not support 2GB modules at all.

Correct. The d975xbx 2 does NOT work with 2 GB modules.

The manual does not claim support for 2 GB modules.

Remember he is talking the D975XBX not the D975XBX2

  sorry, my bad(axe)

Although I can't see what the difference would be? Did Intel downgrade the D975XBX2?

It's the same chipset isn't it?

nope the Intel D975XBX was the original 975X chipset board and the Intel D975XBX2 was the improved second generation board that supported quad-cores and faster memory kits.

Ya, I knew it was an improved chipset. Thats why I assumed that because the xbx2 doesn't support 2 GB moduls the xbx wouldn't either.

Intel support confirmed to me that the D975XBX supports 8GB:

Hmm, yes. Intel claims the XBX2 does 8 Gigs as well. Look at pages 49-50.

I would love it if this was true. But I won't hold my breath. Seems like their saying it will BUT only with certain modules and under certain circumstances "it should" work blah blah blah!

I think we've all been down this road before. Best of luck to you though.

I returned my D974XBX for warranty replacement.

Because I expect this to take long, I decided to get a replacement board. I went for a Gigabyte P35-DQ6, because it supports the new Yorkfield CPUs, DDR2 RAM and was available in a shop nearby. As soon as I have the 8GB RAM for it I will let you know if this board works with 8GB.

The mainboard swap was a pleasant surprise, not Vista reinstall needed: http://forums.legitreviews.com/about12536.html

Hi,
we have same motherboard and same issue. We were running 4x1GB Kingston HyperX modules for about a year, now wanted 8GB (for vmware ESX server), but with same HyperX modules (just 2GB size/module) it won't boot. It just beeps three times. With 1GB and 2GB modules it even didn't beep. Has anyone solved this problem? Which memory really works with this board? I contacted Intel Support and will see what they say (searched through their web didn't help).

Thanks for any tips, PeS

I've had 8 GB in my XBX2 since May. I'm using Kingston RAM part number "KVR667D2E5K2/4G." Just thought I'd share that. I haven't had any problems booting up.
