Intel Server Board SE7520AF2 no boot after config

Post by crp0499a »

OK, I got this board new out of the box. I installed it, dropped in 2 Xeon's and booted off my Server 2003 CD. I got the OS installed and logged into the server. I then tried to install the chipset drivers off the Intel CD. When I rebooted, the server booted off the Intel CD. At that point, a server configuration utility started. I followed along, answered some questions and a LOT of "writing" took place in a DOS window. My server then told me if I was ready to install an OS, to insert the CD and reboot.

At that point, I expected Windows server 2003 to start and it tried. I got to the Windows Server 2003 splash screen and the progreee indicator went across a few times then it froze.

When I try to re-OS, it freezes before I get to the license agreement, at the "Windows is starting" screen.

I can't get past the splash screen and I cant re-OS. I reset the CMOS and still no joy.

IS there a way to reset the board to factory defaults? Is there a way to undo what I did when I ran the config utility? I'm at a loss...

Thanks

Cliff

I just had a similar problem on a different board, turned out to be the cdrom drive. Would freeze on "windows is loading" hang there for an eternity then when I ejected the cd it said failed to initialize session. I strapped on a different cdrom and the install went fine.
That may or may not be your problem, since it's simple I would try a different cdrom drive, since every case is different it might not be.
If it's not I'd boot to the cdrom and format the hard drive giving you clean media to try the reinstall to. It sounds like since you had already installed server 2003, then the cd came up and ask you to reinstall the OS some thing got jacked. If after blanking the hard drive, then you get the same hang at "windows is loading" you'll know it's something in cmos/bios hanging you.

Here's a common method used to reset AMT (Active Management Technology) on a lot of intel server boards. (usually for password issues)

1. Power off the system and disconnect AC power. (
2. Move jumper to 2-3 pin on J1H3 and keep AC power disconnected for about 15 seconds. (
3. Power system on and go into BIOS with F2 (
4. Enable ASF in BIOS (located few lines above "Reset AMT Defaults" on the "Server Management" Tab (quoted from the intel site)
5. Select "Reset AMT Defaults". Wait about 1 minute for the operation to be finished. (
(
Note: Remember to return J1H3 jumper to the 1-2 position. (

If none of that give you any joy here's the intel email support URL http://supportmail.intel.com/scripts-em ... e.aspx?id=
I know your in a hurry to see that investment up and running so here's the Intel support phone number: 916-377-7000 (7am to 5pm pacific time, and they recommend that you contact your local dealer or distributor before contacting Intel, most dealers don't know squiddly they just sell the stuff)

No problem dude, I work with server boards at the local college, and a newspaper among a few other places, they can be a pain, relatively expensive ($1000 range with cpus) and they never buy the same manufactures boards upgrade to upgrade. Usually I get a call saying "Hey we got a server for you to install", when it should have been; Hey what server should we get to install. Leads to a lot of headaches (which is ok headaches are what I get paid for)

After the first of the year I get to work with some blades, that should be interesting lol.

If nothing else come on back an I'll research it a little for ya.

GL with it.
