WHICH MOTHERBOARD SHOULD I GO FOR???

Post by thunderwonder »

I have Intel 865GV Motherboard (Having AGP interface only), Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading Technology (HT) Processor 2.8 GHz (This processor has pins) and 512 MB DDR RAM. Now I've Purchased a XFX 8600GT Graphics Card which requires x16 PCI-Express Slot. So I want to upgrade my Motherboard to support this graphics card without changing my processor though I can change my RAM to DDR2 if required. So which Motherboard should I purchase as the current gen Motherboards (like 915, 945, 965 etc) are not compatiple with my processor.
Please suggest a motherboard which will solve my problem.

just a curious answer. What makes you want to keep the processor? It's alright I'm not saying its horrible. But, sometimes there are little deals. Sometimes processor and mobo, or processor ram and mobo.

you can get a processor that matches and probably beats your current CPU performance for around $50-60, so is it still unjustifiable to get a new processor with your new replacement mobo?

You are better off getting a new CPU along with a new motherboard.

I agree that you should look at a CPU + Mobo + RAM upgrade if you can swing it. Finding a socket 478 motherboard might be tough these days. Newegg has one mATX board with a VIA chipset but case fit might be an issue and you would have to pickup some DDR2. Also stability might be spotty and, in my experience, VIA chipsets are definite "no overclocking" chipsets. But if you're determined linkage is below.
